چکیده

000 The permeability of a variety of materials to ^ Rn has been measured in a Radon/Thoron Test Facility (RTTF) of the walk-in type. The measurements were conducted using an automated multi-sensor apparatus consisting of a number of ^Rn passive monitors and meteorological sensors which permit simultaneous permeability studies of up to 12 different materials. Twenty-two different materials were tested. The permeability measured for these c 01 materials ranged from greater than about 1 x 10’ cm s~ to less than -1.0 x 10’9 cn^s’1. Among the several materials investigated, a number of them are suitable as ^Rn barriers. However, for the special application 000 intended here as wall-cover for restricting the flow of Rn from mine walls (which require low permeability to ^^n. as well as great mechanical flexibility and resistance to impact) only two materials are potentially suitable, namely, an epoxy resin, and MIROC™, a polyurethene-based material. Permeability studies are in progress to evaluate other materials for similar applications but different mechanical configurations.

Radon permeability and radon exhalation of building materials.

High radon concentrations indoors usually depend on the possibilities of radon penetration from the surrounding soil into the buildings. Radon concentrations in dwellings up to 100 kBq/m3 were found in some special regions (i.e. Schneeberg/Saxony, Umhausen/Tyrol), where the soil shows a high uranium content and additionally, a fast radon transport in the soil is possible. To reduce the radon ex...

Radon permeability of insulating building materials

The common presence of the radioactive nuclides in the environment cause that the whole population are exposed to radiation. The dose that is annually received by Polish population from natural sources of radiation is about 2.4 mSv per year [1]. According to the UNSCEAR 2000 Report [2], radon is the greatest contributor of exposure to natural radiation for humans. Soil and the rocks on which th...

Experimental Determination of the Effectiveness of Radon Barriers

Several types of membrane materials (radon retarders) are available for placement under concrete slabs as barriers to the upward movement of soil gas into buildings. Selection of barrier material is seldom based on its resistance to air permeation, as such information is not readily available. For the current study, the permeability of several membrane materials, which may be used as radon barr...

Assessment of Radon level in dwellings of Tabriz

Background & Objective: Indoor radon gas (222Rn) has been recognized as one of the causes of lung cancer. The presence of radioactive radium in the construction & materials in the buildings its changes in contact with radon gas may lead to increase level of radon gas in the residential houses. In this regards, indoor radon measurement is important. This study was conducted to determine radon co...

Investigating Indoor Radon Concentration Using CR-39 Detector; a Case Study of Gachin Dwellings in Hormozgan

Introduction: Radon is a colorless inert gas which decay products are the main component of natural radioactive elements that are naturally produced in under layers of earth crust by decay of radium and uranium. It enters through buildings via gaps and cracks. Radon gas decay products like alpha particle can increase the incidence of lung cancer in human. Since every person sp...
