Performance Comparison between Two Grid Information Service Architectures

Both hierarchical and unstructured (Peer-to-Peer or P2P) architectures can be used to construct a Grid information service (GIS) and the selection of the architecture is a factor affecting the performance of the GIS. In this paper, we have investigated and compared the performance between these two GIS architectures. We describe a P2P GIS architecture based on unstructured multi-source multicast (UMM) overlay approach and conduct a set of experiments to test the scalability performance of its implementation against an hierarchical GIS implementation. Our experimental study shows, the UMM-based unstructured architecture can provide a comparable scalability performance with the hierarchical architecture and it can achieve a remarkable performance improvement when serving special queries.
