چکیده

Non-response weighting is a commonly used method to adjust for bias due to unit nonresponse in surveys. Theory and simulations show that, to reduce bias effectively without increasing variance, a covariate that is used for non-response weighting adjustment needs to be highly associated with both the response indicator and the survey outcome variable. In practice, these requirements pose a challenge that is often overlooked, because those covariates are often not observed or may not exist. Surveys have recently begun to collect supplementary data, such as interviewer observations and other proxy measures of key survey outcome variables. To the extent that these auxiliary variables are highly correlated with the actual outcomes, these variables are promising candidates for non-response adjustment. In the present study, we examine traditional covariates and new auxiliary variables for the National Survey of Family Growth, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, the American National Election Survey, the European Social

Combining information from multiple surveys to enhance estimation of measures of health.

Survey estimates are often affected by non-sampling errors due to missing data, coverage error, and measurement or response error. Such non-sampling errors can be difficult to assess, and possibly correct for, using information from a single survey. Thus, combining information from multiple surveys can be beneficial. In addition, combining information from multiple surveys can help to reduce sa...

Estimating Variance of the Sample Mean in Two-phase Sampling with Unit Non-response Effect

In sample surveys, we always deal with two types of errors: Sampling error and non-sampling error. One of the most common non-sampling errors is nonresponse. This error happens when some sample units are not observed or viewed but they do not answer some of the questions. The complete prevention of this error is not possible, but it can be significantly reduced. The non-response causes bias and ...

Comparing and Validating Measures of Character Skills: Findings from a Nationally Representative Sample

Though researchers now are aware of the potential importance of character skills, such as conscientiousness, grit, self-control, and a growth mindset, researchers struggle to find reliable measures of these skills. In this paper, we use data collected from the Understanding America Study, a nationally representative internet panel to study the validity of innovative measures of character skills...

An Application of Non-response Bias Reduction Using Propensity Score Methods

‎In many statistical studies some units do not respond to a number or all of the questions‎. ‎This situation causes a problem called non-response‎. ‎Bias and variance inflation are two important consequences of non-response in surveys‎. ‎Although increasing the sample size can prevented variance inflation‎, ‎but cannot necessary adjust for the non-response bias‎. ‎Therefore a number of methods ...

Outcomes of applying a geopedologic approach to soil survey in Iran

The paper reviews a set of soil surveys carried out in Iran using a geopedologic approach for different surveying aims in different scales. Most of these studies have implemented a similar survey method including the following steps: delineation of landforms from air photos using geomorphic and soil-landscape relationships, field check of the delineations, sample areas inventory with soils clas...
