چکیده

The picture of exuberant health displayed by most Amerindian populations at the time of first contact has been well-documented. Equally well-documented has been the rapid collapse of health under the usual conditions of acculturation. During the past 12 years my colleagues and I have been involved in the study of Amerindian groups in rapid transition.3 Our interest has been directed primarily at learning more about the important genetic parameters of tribal man; and secondarily at the biomedical pressures shaping some of those parameters as well as the ways in which these pressures change during the process of acculturation. It was inevitable under these circumstances that we would become deeply interested in the problem of Amerindian health, and it is this practical side of our work that I wish to discuss here. All medical researchers are committed to the truism that the state we call “health” is a fragile thing of many components. As our own studies have progressed, we have made the usual discovery of a complex interplay between these

Culture sometimes matters: intra-cultural variation in pro-social behavior among Tsimane Amerindians.

Agent-centered models usually consider only individual-level variables in calculations of economic costs and benefits. There has been little consideration of social or cultural history on shaping payoffs in ways that impact decisions. To examine the role of local expectations on economic behavior, we explore whether village affiliation accounts for the variation in Dictator Game offers among th...

Genetic differentiation in South Amerindians is related to environmental and cultural diversity: evidence from the Y chromosome.

The geographic structure of Y-chromosome variability has been analyzed in native populations of South America, through use of the high-frequency Native American haplogroup defined by the DYS199-T allele and six Y-chromosome-linked microsatellites (DYS19, DYS389A, DYS389B, DYS390, DYS391, and DYS393), analyzed in 236 individuals. The following pattern of within- and among-population variability ...

Uniparental genetic markers in South Amerindians

A comprehensive review of uniparental systems in South Amerindians was undertaken. Variability in the Y-chromosome haplogroups were assessed in 68 populations and 1,814 individuals whereas that of Y-STR markers was assessed in 29 populations and 590 subjects. Variability in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup was examined in 108 populations and 6,697 persons, and sequencing studies used ei...

Key Ethical Issues Discussed at CDC-Sponsored International, Regional Meetings to Explore Cultural Perspectives and Contexts on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response

Background Recognizing the importance of having a broad exploration of how cultural perspectives may shape thinking about ethical considerations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded four regional meetings in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Eastern Mediterranean to explore these perspectives relevant to pandemic influenza preparedness and response. The meetings were ...

Mortality experience of Tsimane Amerindians of Bolivia: regional variation and temporal trends.

This paper examines regional and temporal trends in mortality patterns among the Tsimane, a population of small-scale forager-horticulturalists in lowland Bolivia. We compare age-specific mortality in remote forest and riverine regions with that in more acculturated villages and examine mortality changes among all age groups over the past 50 years. Discrete-time logistic regression is used to e...
