چکیده
The finding that a simple single-celled organism can traverse a maze near optimally provides a challenge to some current ideas in artificial intelligence. In this paper, we present a simple explanation for such behavior and a computational model based on decision trees and ant algorithmics. The behavior of simple biological organisms may provide insights into the nature and evolution of intelligence.

Photoreceptor pigment that induces differentiation in the slime mold Physarum polycephalum.
An extract of small molecules (molecular weight less than 500) of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum undergoes a shift in ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum upon illumination. This illumination also confers on the extract the ability to induce sporulation when injected into a starved, unilluminated slime mold. The spectral shift and appearance of the sporulation-inducing activity both oc...
متن کاملThe Effect of Actidione on Mitosis in the Slime Mold Physarum Polycephalum
Actidione, reportedly a specific inhibitor of protein synthesis, was found to reduce the incorporation of labeled amino acids into proteins of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum without drastically inhibiting the incorporation of nucleic acid precursors into RNA. This inhibitor was found to completely block the ensuing mitosis if it was added at any time between telophase and late prophase. P...
متن کاملPhysarum attraction: Why slime mold behaves as cats do?
We discuss potential chemical substances responsible for attracting acellular slime mold Physarun polycephalum to valerian root. The contributes toward fundamental research into pheromones and chemo-attracts of primitive organisms such as slime molds. The results show that significant information could be gained about the action of compounds on higher organisms.
متن کاملRegulation of Dna Replication in the Nuclei of the Slime Mold Physarum Polycephalum
Nuclei in G2 phase of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum, when transplanted, by plasmodial coalescence, into an S-phase plasmodium, failed to start another round of DNA synthesis. In the reciprocal combination, S-phase nuclei in a G2-phase host continued DNA synthesis for several hours without appreciable decrease in rate. It is suggested that the beginning of DNA replication is determined by...
متن کاملOn the Loading of Slime Mold Physarum polycephalum with Microparticles for Unconventional Computing Application
The plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum is a large single cell visible with the naked eye. The plasmodium realizes a pattern of protoplasmic veins which span sites of sources of nutrients, producing efficient network structures like cycles and Steiner minimum trees. Besides, the plasmodium can embed different chemicals; therefore, it should be possible to program the plasmodium to realize deter...
