Measuring TCP over WiFi: A Real Case
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a measurement study of an operative WLAN. After briefly presenting the methodology used to generate traffic and measure performance indices, we present results focusing on the performance perceived by TCP connections, to understand the mechanisms which have a major effect on performance. We investigate the impact of TCP parameters, like the maximum congestion window, the effectiveness of link layer mechanisms such as RTS/CTS, and multirate transmissions. Rather than only presenting aggregate measures, we show results relative to individual TCP connections, considering throughput as well as TCP round trip time, congestion window and segment retransmissions.

HACK: Hierarchical ACKs for Efficient Wireless Medium Utilization
WiFi’s physical layer has increased in speed from 802.11b’s 11 Mbps to the Gbps rates of emerging 802.11ac. Despite these gains, WiFi’s inefficient MAC layer limits achievable end-to-end throughput. The culprit is 802.11’s mandatory idle period before each medium acquisition, which has come to dwarf the duration of a packet’s transmission. This overhead is especially punishing for TCP traffic, ...
متن کاملThroughput Unfairness in TCP over WiFi
This paper presents a measurement study of TCP performance at an operational WiFi deployment. After presenting the network topology and the tools used to generate and analyze traffic, we examine the throughput performance of competing TCP connections. We investigate how throughput is divided among the participating wireless hosts with respect to signal strength, traffic direction and use of the...
متن کاملSoftspeak: Making VoIP Play Well in Existing 802.11 Deployments
Voice over IP (VoIP) in 802.11 wireless networks (WiFi) is an attractive alternative to cellular wireless telephony. Unfortunately, VoIP traffic is well known to make inefficient use of such networks. Indeed, we demonstrate that increasing handset deployment has the potential to cripple existing hotspot and enterprise WiFi networks. Our experiments show that VoIP halves the available TCP capaci...

متن کاملImproving Energy Efficiency of MPTCP for Mobile Devices
Multi-Path TCP (MPTCP) is a new transport protocol that enables systems to exploit available paths through multiple network interfaces. MPTCP is particularly useful for mobile devices, which usually have multiple wireless interfaces. However, these devices have limited power capacity and thus judicious use of these interfaces is required. In this work, we develop a model for MPTCP energy consum...
