چکیده

The maximum matching width is a graph width parameter that is defined on a branchdecomposition over the vertex set of a graph. In this short paper, we prove that the problem of computing the maximum matching width is NP-hard.

Parallelizing Assignment Problem with DNA Strands

Background:Many problems of combinatorial optimization, which are solvable only in exponential time, are known to be Non-Deterministic Polynomial hard (NP-hard). With the advent of parallel machines, new opportunities have been emerged to develop the effective solutions for NP-hard problems. However, solving these problems in polynomial time needs massive parallel machines and ...

Minimal Unsatisfiable Formulas with Bounded Clause-Variable Difference are Fixed-Parameter Tractable

The deficiency of a propositional formula F in CNF with n variables and m clauses is defined as m−n. It is known that minimal unsatisfiable formulas (unsatisfiable formulas which become satisfiable by removing any clause) have positive deficiency. Recognition of minimal unsatisfiable formulas is NP-hard, and it was shown recently that minimal unsatisfiable formulas with deficiency k can be reco...

The Computational Complexity of Weighted Greedy Matching

Motivated by the fact that in several cases a matching in a graph is stable if and only if it is produced by a greedy algorithm, we study the problem of computing a maximum weight greedy matching on weighted graphs, termed GREEDYMATCHING. In wide contrast to the maximum weight matching problem, for which many efficient algorithms are known, we prove that GREEDYMATCHING is strongly NP-hard and A...

Size Versus Stability in the Marriage Problem

Given an instance I of the classical Stable Marriage problem with Incomplete preference lists (smi), a maximum cardinality matching can be larger than a stable matching. In many large-scale applications of smi, we seek to match as many agents as possible. This motivates the problem of finding a maximum cardinality matching in I that admits the smallest number of blocking pairs (so is “as stable...

On the NP-Hardness of Approximating Ordering Constraint Satisfaction Problems

We show improved NP-hardness of approximating Ordering Constraint Satisfaction Problems (OCSPs). For the two most well-studied OCSPs, MAXIMUM ACYCLIC SUBGRAPH and MAXIMUM BETWEENNESS, we prove NP-hard approximation factors of 14 15 + ε and 1 2 + ε . When it is hard to approximate an OCSP by a constant better than taking a uniformly-at-random ordering, then the OCSP is said to be approximation r...
