Adaptive and Maladaptive Dynamics of Reward Learning and Mood

چکیده
It has proved surprisingly hard to generalize from the rapid advances in our understanding of fundamental cognitive mechanisms to people’s real-life behavior. This is in part because the impact such mechanisms have in real life depends on how they dynamically interact with other aspects of our mental state and environmental circumstances. I will present recent work uncovering one such dynamical interaction, involving reward learning and mood: unexpected rewards affect mood and mood in turn affects responses to subsequent rewards. I will show that this two-way interaction can have both adaptive and maladaptive consequences. On one hand, it can ‘correct’ learning to account for global changes in the availability of reward in the environment; on the other hand, it might give rise to unstable oscillatory dynamics that result in emotional instability. I will introduce a novel smartphone-based experimental approach that allows directly studying how such real-life cognitive processes unfold over time.

Optimal adaptive leader-follower consensus of linear multi-agent systems: Known and unknown dynamics
In this paper, the optimal adaptive leader-follower consensus of linear continuous time multi-agent systems is considered. The error dynamics of each player depends on its neighbors’ information. Detailed analysis of online optimal leader-follower consensus under known and unknown dynamics is presented. The introduced reinforcement learning-based algorithms learn online the approximate solution...

Introduction: Concerning the importance of examining the determinants and effective variables in psychological well-being, this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between adaptive and maladaptive humor style with psychological well-being among nurses. Methods: This descriptive- correlation study was conducted on 190 nursing students (78 males and 112 females) from nursing stude...
متن کاملCombinations of resting RSA and RSA reactivity impact maladaptive mood repair and depression symptoms.
We examined whether the combined indices of respiratory sinus arrhythmia at rest (resting RSA) and in response to a sad film (RSA reactivity) predict effective and ineffective responses to reduce sadness (adaptive vs. maladaptive mood repair) in women with histories of juvenile-onset depression (n=74) and no history of major mental disorders (n=75). Structural equation models were used to estim...
متن کاملA Comparison of Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem Based on Their Relationship With Adaptive and Maladaptive Emotion Regulation Strategies
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, self-compassion, and self-esteem; and to determine whether self-compassion compared to self-esteem, was a better predictor of the scores on the adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Methods: This was a cross-section...
متن کاملA Neurocomputational Account of How Inflammation Enhances Sensitivity to Punishments Versus Rewards
BACKGROUND Inflammation rapidly impairs mood and cognition and, when severe, can appear indistinguishable from major depression. These sickness responses are characterized by an acute reorientation of motivational state; pleasurable activities are avoided, and sensitivity to negative stimuli is enhanced. However, it remains unclear how these rapid shifts in behavior are mediated within the brai...
