Validity of adult lifetime self-reported body weight.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To investigate the accuracy of self-reported weight status over the adult lifespan. DESIGN Estimates of self-report bias were obtained from a linear regression analysis and the magnitude of the discrepancy was studied for demographic groups (based on gender, race and educational attainment), weight status, number of years from the age of the reported weight and current age of the respondent. SUBJECTS A subset of 6101 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Epidemiological Follow-Up constituted the study sample. RESULTS Gender, elapsed time and BMI contributed to self-report bias. Effects of gender and elapsed time were small relative to the effects of BMI, with women tending to underestimate weight by 0.82 kg (1.8 lb), men overestimating by 2.27 kg (5.0 lb) and bias increasing by 0.09 kg (0.2 lb) for each year of retrospection. Every increase of one unit in BMI was associated with an additional 0.91 kg (2.0 lb) underestimate in self-reported weight. CONCLUSION Accuracy of adult self-reported weight profiles will be greatly underestimated if samples have individuals of current or past high relative weight. Adjusting for underestimation based on the respondent's weight status alone will considerably improve the validity of weight information.

Reliability of self-reported height and weight measurement in the evaluation of adult overweight and obesity
Introduction: The validity of Body Mass Index (BMI) based on self-reported height and weight is of critical importance in the proper assessment of studies that rely on questionnaire-derived data. In this study, we evaluate the accuracy of adolescent overweight and obesity classification bpased on self-reported height and weight factors and propose a regression model for predicting the true BMI....
متن کاملValidity of self-reported birth weight by adult women: sociodemographic influences and implications for life-course studies.
Life-course epidemiologic studies frequently obtain data on perinatal and childhood factors through adult self-report. Data from a prospective US birth cohort of 262 women, born between 1959 and 1963 (average age at adult follow-up, 41.8 years), were used to assess the validity of self-reported birth weight category by sociodemographic characteristics. The effect of reporting error on the assoc...
متن کاملValidity of Self-Reported Body Mass Index and Sleeping Problems Among Adult Population of Georgia
Purpose: This study assessed the validity of body mass index (BMI) derived from self-reported height and weight in comparison to BMI derived from clinical measurement. We further examined the misclassification effect of self-reported BMI in association with complaints of snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. Methods: Data came from a population-based study of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) ...
متن کاملValidity of Self-Reports of Height and Weight among the General Adult Population in Japan: Findings from National Household Surveys, 1986.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Growing evidence indicates that self-reported height and weight are biased, but little is known about systematic errors in the general adult population in Japan. This study takes advantage of the unique opportunity to examine this issue provided by the 1986 National Nutrition Survey. SUBJECTS/METHODS Individual-level data on a nationally representative sample aged 20-89 ...
متن کاملLifetime body size and reproductive factors: comparisons of data recorded prospectively with self reports in middle age
BACKGROUND Data on lifetime exposures are often self-reported in epidemiologic studies, sometimes many years after the relevant age. Validity of self-reported data is usually inferred from their agreement with measured values, but few studies directly quantify the likely effects of reporting errors in body size and reproductive history variables on estimates of disease-exposure associations. ...
