Abstract The introduction of consumer head mounted display (HMD) systems and mobile VR devices lead to a growing number of mixed presence situations. One problem that arises is the awareness of bystanders while using a fully immersive HMD. We aim to address a subtle, non-visual communication of (1) the recognition of people approaching the VR user, (2) the communication of intentions of the approaching people and (3) higher level non-verbal communication of surrounding people to the HMD user. We investigate ways to foster the sense of presence beyond visual representations. Based on examples from the animal kingdom, we present three concepts that use either seismic vibrations on the foot, or eclectricity or vibrations on the upperbody to increase awareness of others in mixed presence scenarios.

Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) reassure others in distress
Contact directed by uninvolved bystanders toward others in distress, often termed consolation, is uncommon in the animal kingdom, thus far only demonstrated in the great apes, canines, and corvids. Whereas the typical agonistic context of such contact is relatively rare within natural elephant families, other causes of distress may trigger similar, other-regarding responses. In a study carried ...
متن کاملThe three-dimensional locomotor dynamics of African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian (Elephas maximus) elephants reveal a smooth gait transition at moderate speed.
We examined whether elephants shift to using bouncing (i.e. running) mechanics at any speed. To do this, we measured the three-dimensional centre of mass (CM) motions and torso rotations of African and Asian elephants using a novel multisensor method. Hundreds of continuous stride cycles were recorded in the field. African and Asian elephants moved very similarly. Near the mechanically and meta...
متن کاملHow Bees Deter Elephants: Beehive Trials with Forest Elephants (Loxodonta africana cyclotis) in Gabon
In Gabon, like elsewhere in Africa, crops are often sources of conflict between humans and wildlife. Wildlife damage to crops can drastically reduce income, amplifying poverty and creating a negative perception of wild animal conservation among rural people. In this context, crop-raiding animals like elephants quickly become "problem animals". To deter elephants from raiding crops beehives have...
متن کاملNotiSense: An Urban Sensing Notification System To Improve Bystander Privacy
The growth in popularity of hand-held mobile devices has fuelled research exploring how to harness the collective abilities of sensors attached to these devices. One area of development has been urban sensing, which explores building a crowd-sourced wireless sensor network using consumer mobile devices. Urban sensing participants use their devices to capture information about their surroundings...
متن کاملHyaline membrane disease, alkali, and intraventricular haemorrhage.
The relation between intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) and hyaline membrane disease (HMD) was studied in singletons that came to necropsy at Hammersmith Hospital over the years 1966-73. The incidence of IVH in singleton live births was 3-22/1000 and of HMD 4-44/1000. Although the high figures were partily due to the large number of low birthweight infants born at this hospital, the incidence o...
