Low Serum Thyrotropin, Statins, and Hyperthyroidism

چکیده

Each month the editor of Newsline selects articles on diagnostic, therapeutic, research, and practice issues from a range of international publications. Most selections come from outside the standard canon of nuclear medicine and radiology journals. These briefs are offered as a monthly window on the broad arena of medical and scientific endeavor in which nuclear medicine now plays an essential role. We have recently added a special section on molecular imaging, including both radionuclidebased and other molecular imaging efforts, in recognition of the extraordinary activity and promise of both diagnostic and therapeutic progress in this area. The lines between diagnosis and therapy are sometimes blurred, as radiolabels are increasingly used as adjuncts to therapy and/or as active agents in therapeutic regimens, and these shifting lines are reflected in the briefs presented here.

Thyroid function and mole pregnancy [Persian]

The incidence of mole pregnancy appears to be higher in Iran than in Europe or North America. This gave us an opportunity to study a number of biochemical measurements related to the thyroid. In 14 patients with hydatiform mole, the T3 resin uptake, serum thyroxine (T4), ETR, T3 RIA, human serum TSH (hTSH) and serum human Chorinic gonadotropin (hCG) were measured. Of the 14 patients 6 sho...

Hyperthyroidism in children.

On the basis of strong research evidence, hyperthyroidism is a rare but potentially serious disorder in childhood that, if uncontrolled, can lead to a wide range of complications, including effects on growth and development. • On the basis of strong research evidence, Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in children, accounting for greater than 95% of cases. It is caused ...

Immunoradiometric assay of thyrotropin as a "first-line" thyroid-function test in the routine laboratory.

We compared the utility of a sensitive immunoradiometric assay for serum thyrotropin as a "first-line" thyroid-function test with a strategy based on first measuring total thyroxin in serum. The immunoradiometric assay appears to distinguish primary hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism from euthyroidism in "new" patients. The role of this test in monitoring antithyroid treatment or thyroxin-repla...

Thyrotropin secreting pituitary tumours: a cause of hyperthyroidism.

Pituitary thyrotropin excess resulting in hyperthyroidism has been previously reported in only 25 patients, of whom 19 had a pituitary tumour. This report describes a patient in whom a thyrotropin-producing pituitary tumour was associated with triiodothyronine thyrotoxicosis. Hypophysectomy was followed by a prompt fall in serum thyrotropin and a return to a euthyroid state.

Diagnostic performance of sensitive measurements of serum thyrotropin during severe nonthyroidal illness: their role in the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

Serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations were measured serially in 14 heart-transplant recipients (group 1) and 21 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (group 2), all without thyroid disease, and randomly in 158 patients hospitalized for various other nonthyroidal illnesses, including 144 judged euthyroid (group 3), six with increased FT4 and (or) T3 (group 4), and eight classified ...
