چکیده

The spatial distribution of a natural resource is an important consideration in designing an efŽ cient survey or monitoring program for the resource. Generally, sample sites that are spatially balanced, that is, more or less evenly dispersed over the extent of the resource, are more efŽ cient than simple random sampling. We review a uniŽ ed strategy for selecting spatially balanced probability samples of natural resources. The technique is based on creating a function that maps two-dimensional space into one-dimensional space, thereby deŽ ning an ordered spatial address. We use a restricted randomization to randomly order the addresses, so that systematic sampling along the randomly ordered linear structure results in a spatially well-balanced random sample. Variable inclusion probability, proportional to an arbitrary positive ancillary variable, is easily accommodated. The basic technique selects points in a two-dimensional continuum, but is also applicable to sampling Ž nite populations or one-dimensional continua embedded in two-dimensional space. An extension of the basic technique gives a way to order the sample points so that any set of consecutively numbered points is in itself a spatially well-balanced sample. This latter property is extremely useful in adjusting the sample for the frame imperfections common in environmental sampling.

Balanced Acceptance Sampling+m: A Balance Between Entropy and Spatially Balance

Balanced acceptance sampling is a relatively new sampling scheme that has potential to improve the efficiency of spatial studies. There are two drawbacks of the design, it can have low entropy and some of the unbiased estimates can not be calculated. In this paper, such shortcomings have been addressed by integrating simple random sampling with balanced acceptance sampling. In a simulation stud...

Spatially Correlated Poisson Sampling

A new method for sampling from a finite population that is spread in one, two or more dimensions is presented. Weights are used to create strong negative correlations between the inclusion indicators of nearby units. The method can be used to produce unequal probability samples that are well spread over the population in every dimension, without any spatial stratification. Since the method is v...

Spatial variability of some soil properties for site specific farming in northern Iran

Evaluating agricultural land management practices requires knowledge of soil spatial variability and understanding their relationships. Spatial distributions for fourteen soil physical and chemical properties were examined in a wheat field in Sorkhankalateh district, in Golestan province, Iran. 101 soil samples at the distances of 5m, 10m and 20m as nested grid were collected at the depth of 0-...

Doubly Balanced Spatial Sampling with Spreading and Restitution of Auxiliary Totals

A new spatial sampling method is proposed in order to achieve a double property of balancing. The sample is spatially balanced or well spread so as to avoid selecting neighbouring units. Moreover, the method also enables to satisfy balancing equations on auxiliary variables available on all the sampling units because the Horvitz-Thompson estimator is almost equal to the population totals for th...

Spatially balanced sampling through the pivotal method.

A simple method to select a spatially balanced sample using equal or unequal inclusion probabilities is presented. For populations with spatial trends in the variables of interest, the estimation can be much improved by selecting samples that are well spread over the population. The method can be used for any number of dimensions and can hence also select spatially balanced samples in a space s...
