Coalescents with Simultaneous Multiple Collisions

چکیده

We study a family of coalescent processes that undergo “simultaneous multiple collisions,” meaning that many clusters of particles can merge into a single cluster at one time, and many such mergers can occur simultaneously. This family of processes, which we obtain from simple assumptions about the rates of different types of mergers, essentially coincides with a family of processes that Möhle and Sagitov obtain as a limit of scaled ancestral processes in a population model with exchangeable family sizes. We characterize the possible merger rates in terms of a single measure, show how these coalescents can be constructed from a Poisson process, and discuss some basic properties of these processes. This work generalizes some work of Pitman, who provides similar analysis for a family of coalescent processes in which many clusters can coalesce into a single cluster, but almost surely no two such mergers occur simultaneously.

Conditions for exchangeable coalescents to come down from infinity

An improved condition to come down from infinity for exchangeable coalescent processes with simultaneous multiple collisions of ancestral lineages is provided. For non-critical coalescents this leads to an improved necessary and sufficient condition for the coalescent to come down from infinity. An analog conjecture for the full class of exchangeable coalescents is presented. New examples of cr...

On the Number of Allelic Types for Samples Taken from Exchangeable Coalescents with Mutation

Exchangeable coalescents are Markovian processes with state space E , the set of equivalence relations (partitions) on N := {1, 2, . . .} with a block merging mechanism. The class of exchangeable coalescents with multiple collisions has been independently introduced by Pitman [23] and Sagitov [24]. These processes can be characterized by a finite measure Λ on the unit interval [0, 1] and are he...

Kingman derived the Ewens sampling formula for random partitions from the genealogy model defined by a Poisson process of mutations along lines of descent governed by a simple coalescent process. Möhle described the recursion which determines the generalization of the Ewens sampling formula when the lines of descent are governed by a coalescent with multiple collisions. In [7] authors exploit a...

On the external branches of coalescents with multiple collisions

A recursion for the joint moments of the external branch lengths for coalescents with multiple collisions (Λ-coalescents) is provided. This recursion is used to derive asymptotic results as the sample size n tends to infinity for the joint moments of the external branch lengths and for the moments of the total external branch length of the Bolthausen–Sznitman coalescent. These asymptotic result...

The site-frequency spectrum associated with Ξ-coalescents.

We give recursions for the expected site-frequency spectrum associated with so-called Xi-coalescents, that is exchangeable coalescents which admit simultaneous multiple mergers of ancestral lineages. Xi-coalescents arise, for example, in association with population models of skewed offspring distributions with diploidy, recurrent advantageous mutations, or strong bottlenecks. In contrast, the s...
