Keck Spectroscopy of distant GOODS Spheroidal Galaxies: Downsizing in a Hierarchical Universe
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze the evolution of the Fundamental Plane for 141 field spheroidal galaxies in the redshift range 0.2<z<1.2, selected morphologically to a magnitude limit F850LP=22.43 in the northern field of the Great Observatories Origin Survey. For massive galaxies we find that the bulk of the star formation was completed prior to z = 2. However, for the lower mass galaxies, the luminosityweighted ages are significantly younger. The differential change in mass-to-light ratio correlates closely with rest-frame color, consistent with recent star formation and associated growth. Our data are consistent with mass rather than environment governing the overall growth, contrary to the expectations of hierarchical assembly. We discuss how feedback, conduction, and galaxy interactions may explain the downsizing trends seen within our large sample. Observational tests of the evolution of spheroidal galaxies and predictions for SIRTF/Spitzer cosmological surveys
Granato et al. (2004) have elaborated a physically grounded model exploiting the mutual feedback between starforming spheroidal galaxies and the active nuclei growing in their cores to overcome, in the framework of the hierarchical clustering scenario for galaxy formation, one of the main challenges facing such scenario, i.e. the fact that massive spheroidal galaxies appear to have formed much ...
متن کاملMerging Galaxies in Goods-s: First Extragalactic Results from Keck Laser Adaptive Optics
The Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) aims to combine deep HST images in the optical with deep Keck adaptive optics (AO) data in the near-infrared (NIR) to study distant galaxies, AGN, and supernovae. We recently achieved an important new milestone by securing the first Keck laser guide star AO image of faint galaxies. Six galaxies with redshifts ranging from 0.3-1.0 were target...
متن کاملKeck Spectroscopy of the Hubble Deep Field
Spectra of 115 HDF galaxies to I 25 mag were obtained by the Santa Cruz DEEP group with the Keck LRIS multislit spectrograph and combined with detailed structural measurements from the HDF images to (i) derive evolution for a sample of disk galaxies at z 0:5 using the Tully-Fisher relation, (ii) characterize, from size and velocity width data, the global properties to z 1 of a sample of 60 \com...
متن کاملThe Deep Project
DEEP is a multi-institutional program designed to undertake a major new spectroscopic survey of faint eld galaxies with the Keck II 10-m telescope. The scientiic goals are broad and include exploring galaxy formation and evolution, mapping the large scale structure at moderate to high redshifts, and constraining the nature and distribution of dark matter and cosmology. Besides the primary goal ...
متن کاملClustering of Submillimeter - Selected Galaxies
Using accurate positions from very deep radio observations to guide multi-object Keck spectroscopy, we have determined a substantially complete redshift distribution for very luminous, distant submillimeter(submm)-selected galaxies (SMGs). A sample of 73 redshifts for SMGs in 7 fields contains a surprisingly large number of ‘associations’: systems of SMGs with Mpc-scale separations, and redshif...
