Johari-Goldstein Relaxation Events Are Metabasin Transitions

چکیده
We show that by representing quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from propylene carbonate (PC) with an explicitly heterogeneous model, we recover signatures of two distinct localized modes in addition to diffusive motion. The intermediate scattering function provides access to the time-dependence of these two localized dynamic processes, and they appear to correspond to transitions between inherent states and between metabasins on a potential energy landscape. By fitting the full q-dependence of inelastic scattering, we confirm that that the Johari-Goldstein (βJG) relaxation in PC is indistinguishable from metabasin transitions.

Static and dynamic glass-glass transitions: a mean-field study
The behavior of a family of mean-field glass models is reviewed. The models are analyzed by means of a Langevin-based approach to the dynamics and a Replica theory computation of the thermodynamics. We focus on the phase diagram of a particular model case, where glass-to-glass transitions occur between phases with a different number of characteristic timescales for the relaxation processes. The...
متن کاملSimilar dielectric behaviour of polyphenylglycidyl-ether and diglycidyl-ether of bisphenol-A at glass transition temperature
In this work, the dynamics of the primary and the Johari-Goldstein (JG) processes are studied with dielectric spectroscopy. We found the relaxations at glass transition temperature in polyphenylglycidylether and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A to be strongly correlated over a wide temperature T and pressure P range. Analysing the temperature and pressure behaviour of the and (JG) -processes...
متن کاملDielectric and shear mechanical alpha and beta relaxations in seven glass-forming liquids.
We present shear mechanical and dielectric measurements taken on seven liquids: triphenylethylene, tetramethyltetra-phenyltrisiloxane (Dow Corning 704 diffusion pump fluid), polyphenyl ether (Santovac 5 vacuum pump fluid), perhydrosqualene, polybutadiene, decahydroisoquinoline (DHIQ), and tripropylene glycol. The shear mechanical and dielectric measurements are for each liquid performed under i...
متن کاملCharacteristics of the Johari-Goldstein process in rigid asymmetric molecules.
Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out on a Lennard-Jones binary mixture of rigid (fixed bond length) diatomic molecules. The translational and rotational correlation functions, and the corresponding susceptibilities, exhibit two relaxation processes: the slow structural relaxation (α dynamics) and a higher frequency secondary relaxation. The latter is a Johari-Goldstein (JG) process, ...
متن کاملUltraslow dielectric relaxation process in supercooled polyhydric alcohols.
Complex permittivity was obtained on glycerol, xylitol, sorbitol and sorbitol-xylitol mixtures in the supercooled liquid state in the frequency range between 10 microHz and 500 MHz at temperatures near and above the glass transition temperature. For all the materials, a dielectric relaxation process was observed in addition to the well-known structural alpha and Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation...
