Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: biomarker for treatment response in oncology*

چکیده
The assessment of cancer and its metastases by means of functional imaging techniques may lead to a more reliable diagnosis and early knowledge of the treatment efficacy. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents a promising imaging tool for tissue characterization, prediction and evaluation of therapeutic response in oncology. In cases of liver disease, diffusion-weighted imaging presents higher sensitivity in the detection of lesions as compared with T2weighted sequences. Diffusion-weighted MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique which measures the water mobility within the tissues. The quantitative diffusion analysis is performed by means of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), which is inversely proportional to the cellularity. High ADC values correspond to greater freedom of motion of water molecules, for example, when some intact cell structures, such as membranes, are present. Processes such as cell apoptosis and proliferation influence the cell density and therefore the ADC value. Diffusion is a cell marker. Malignant lesions, such as liver metastases, frequently demonstrate low ADC values, except in cases of treated lesions or necrosis. Low INTRODUCTION

Clinical Significance of Diffusion Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging on Treatment Efficacy in MS Patients With Acute Attacks
Background: Despite the existence of various imaging methods, the accurate diagnosis of many neurodegenerative diseases is still controversial. The use of advanced imaging techniques, such as the diffusion weighted imaging can be help the early detection of MS and evaluation of the treatment efficacy in these patients. Materials and method: 24 MS patients with acute attack and thirty healthy s...

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a powerful MRI method, which probes abnormalities of tissue structure by detecting microscopic changes in water mobility at a cellular level beyond what is available with other imaging techniques. Accordingly, DWI has the potential to identify pathology before gross anatomic changes are evident on standard anatomical brain images. These features of tissue cha...
متن کاملThe Utility of Diffusion Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Detection of the Origin of the Brain Solid Metastatic Tumors
Background: Early diagnosis of brain tumors has significant effect on the treatment process. Brain metastatic tumors are usually diagnosed following the neurological symptoms in patients or incidentally after Computerized Tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) requests of the brain. Objectives: Implementation of a new method for being informed about the origin of brain tumors...
متن کاملDynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...
متن کاملDynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging as an imaging biomarker.
Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is being used in oncology as a noninvasive method for measuring properties of the tumor microvasculature. There is potential for DCE-MRI to be used as an imaging biomarker to measure antiangiogenic effects of cancer treatments. This article reviews the general methodology for performing DCE-MRI and discusses existing data and challe...
