Separability of Tones and Rhymes in Chinese Speech Perception: Evidence from Perceptual Migration

چکیده

The present study uses the perceptual-migration paradigm to explore whether Chinese tones and rhymes are encoded separately during Mandarin speech perception. Following the logic of illusory conjunctions, we calculated the cross-ear migration rates of tones, rhymes, and their combination in Chinese and English listeners. For Chinese listeners, we found that tones migrated more than rhymes. The opposite pattern was found for English listeners. These results suggest that tones are registered separately from their tone-bearing rhyme in Chinese listeners, but they have no independent representation in speakers of nontonal languages. The results lend support to autosegmental theory, which claims separability and mobility between tonal and segmental representations.

Neural correlates of segmental and tonal information in speech perception.

The Chinese language provides an optimal window for investigating both segmental and suprasegmental units. The aim of this cross-linguistic fMRI study is to elucidate neural mechanisms involved in extraction of Chinese consonants, rhymes, and tones from syllable pairs that are distinguished by only one phonetic feature (minimal) vs. those that are distinguished by two or more phonetic features ...

Perceptual cues of whispered tones: are they really special?

This paper reports our initial findings on whether Mandarin Chinese has developed effective strategies to convey tonal information in whispered speech. We recorded phonated and whispered tones in monosyllabic words, and analyzed the acoustic properties of the tonal contrasts. We then generated amplitude-modulated noise based on both the phonated and whispered utterances and used them as stimuli...

Cantonese-Speaking Children Do Not Acquire Tone Perception before Tone Production—A Perceptual and Acoustic Study of Three-Year-Olds' Monosyllabic Tones

Models of phonological development assume that speech perception precedes speech production and that children acquire suprasegmental features earlier than segmental features. Studies of Chinese-speaking children challenge these assumptions. For example, Chinese-speaking children can produce tones before two-and-a-half years but are not able to discriminate the same tones until after 6 years of ...

Language Specificity in Speech Perception: Perception of Mandarin Tones by Native and Nonnative Listeners

The results reported in this paper indicate that native speakers of Mandarin Chinese rate the perceptual similarities among the lexical tones of Mandarin differently than do native speakers of American English. Mandarin listeners were sensitive to tone contour while English listeners attended to pitch levels. Chinese listeners also rated tones that are neutralized by phonological tone sandhi ru...
