چکیده

Iterative decoding of turbo codes, as well as other concatenated coding schemes of similar nature, requires accurate knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio of the channel so that proper blending of the a posteriori information of the separate decoders is achieved. In this paper, we study the sensitivity of decoder performance to mis-estimation of the SNR, and propose a simple on-line scheme that estimates the unknown SNR from each code block, prior to decoding. We show this scheme is suuciently adequate in accuracy to not appreciably degrade performance.

SNR Estimation in Nakagami Fading with Diversity for Turbo Decoding

In this paper, we propose an online SNR estimation scheme for Nakagami-m fading channels with equal gain diversity combining. We derive the SNR estimates based on the statistical ratio of certain observables over a block of received data. An online SNR estimator for an AWGN channel has been derived by Summers and Wilson. Recently, we derived an SNR estimation scheme for Nakagami-m fading channe...

SNR estimation in Nakagami-m fading with diversity combining and its application to turbo decoding

We propose an online signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation scheme for Nakagamifading channels with branch equal gain combining (EGC) diversity. We derive the SNR estimate based on the statistical ratio of certain observables over a block of data, and use the SNR estimates in the iterative decoding of turbo codes on Nakagamifading channels with branch EGC diversity. We evaluate the turbo decode...

SNR estimation in generalized fading channels and its application to turbo decoding

In this paper, we propose an online SNR estimation scheme for generalized fading channels. We derive the SNR estimate based on a statistical ratio of observables over a block of data, when the channel undergoes Nakagami fading. An online SNR estimator for AWGN channels has been derived recently by Summers and Wilson. Our SNR estimation scheme in this paper is for a general Nakagami fading chann...

Effect of mismatched SNR on the performance of log-MAP turbo detector

The effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) mismatch on the bit error rate (BER) performance of Log-MAP turbo detector is studied. It is shown that the sensitivity to the mismatched SNR depends on the channel loss and the encoder memory length. In particular, the sensitivity is more important for a “difficult-to-equalize” channel or, in other words, a high-loss channel. In fact, by affecting the ...

Synchronization of turbo codes based on online statistics

Turbo codes are sensitive to both (timing) synchronization errors and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) mismatch. Since turbo codes are intended to be deployed in environments with very low SNR, conventional synchronization methods often fail. This paper introduces a solution for jointly estimating the SNR and achieving timing synchronization based on the statistics of the received signal. Simulation...
