چکیده

We present algorithms to efficiently bound the depth of the state spaces explored by explicit state model checkers. Given a parameter k, our algorithms guarantee finding any violation of an invariant that is witnessed using a counterexample of length k or less from the initial state. Though depth bounding is natural with breadth first search, explicit state model checkers are unable to use breadth first search due to prohibitive space requirements, and use depth first search to explore large state spaces. Thus, we explore efficient ways to perform depth bounding with depth first search. We prove our algorithms sound (in the sense that they explore exactly all the states reachable within a depth bound), and show their effectiveness on large real-life models from Microsoft’s

XX Incremental Bisimulation Abstraction Refinement

ion refinement techniques in probabilistic model checking are prominent approaches to the verification of very large or infinite-state probabilistic concurrent systems. At the core of the refinement step lies the implicit or explicit analysis of a counterexample. This paper proposes an abstraction refinement approach for the probabilistic computation tree logic (PCTL), which is based on increme...

Symbolic Causality Checking Using Bounded Model Checking

In precursory work we have developed causality checking, a fault localization method for concurrent system models relying on the Halpern and Pearl counterfactual model of causation that identifies ordered occurrences of system events as being causal for the violation of non-reachability properties. Our first implementation of causality checking relies on explicit-state model checking. In this p...

Experimental Analysis of Different Techniques for Bounded Model Checking

Bounded model checking (BMC) is a procedure that searches for counterexamples to a given property through bounded executions of a non-terminating system. This paper compares the performance of SAT-based, BDD-based and explicit state based BMC on benchmarks drawn from commercial designs. Our experimental framework provides a uniform and comprehensive basis to evaluate each of these approaches. T...

Automata-theoretic and bounded model checking for linear temporal logic

In this work we study methods for model checking the temporal logic LTL. The focus is on the automata-theoretic approach to model checking and bounded model checking. We begin by examining automata-theoretic methods to model check LTL safety properties. The model checking problem can be reduced to checking whether the language of a finite state automaton on finite words is empty. We describe an...

Bounded Transaction Model Checking

Industrial cache coherence protocol models often have too many reachable states, preventing full reachability analysis even for small model instances (number of processors, addresses, etc.). Several partial search debugging methods are, therefore, employed, including lossy state compression using hash compaction, and bounded model checking (BMC, or equivalently, depth-bounded search). We show t...
