چکیده

was surmised already by Legendre and Gauss. However, it took a hundred years before the first proofs appeared, one by Hadamard and one by de la Vall~e Poussin (1896). Their and all but one of the subsequent proofs make heavy use of the Riemann zeta function. (The one exception is the long so-called elementary proof by Selberg [11] and Erd6s [41.) For Re s > 1 the zeta function is given by the Dirichlet series ~'(s) = ~ I ~

Proof of D. J. Newman's Coprime Mapping Conjecture

We call the function / described in the theorem a coprime mapping. Theorem 1 settles in the affirmative a conjecture of D. J. Newman. The special case when / = {JV + l.JV + 2, ...,2Af} was proved by D. E. Daykin and M. J. Baines [2]. V. Chvatal [1] established Newman's conjecture for each JV ^ 1002. We prove Theorem 1 constructively by giving an algorithm for the construction of a coprime mappi...

GENERALIZED PRINCIPAL IDEAL THEOREM FOR MODULES

The Generalized Principal Ideal Theorem is one of the cornerstones of dimension theory for Noetherian rings. For an R-module M, we identify certain submodules of M that play a role analogous to that of prime ideals in the ring R. Using this definition, we extend the Generalized Principal Ideal Theorem to modules.

18.703 Modern Algebra, A Quick Primality Test

Prime numbers are one of the most basic objects in mathematics and one of the most basic questions is to decide which numbers are prime (a clearly related problem is to find the prime factorisation of a number). Given a number n one would like a quick way to decide if n is prime, say using a computer. Quick can be given a precise meaning. First one measures the complexity by the number of digit...

Second Order Moment Asymptotic Expansions for a Randomly Stopped and Standardized Sum

This paper establishes the first four moment expansions to the order o(a^−1) of S_{t_{a}}^{prime }/sqrt{t_{a}}, where S_{n}^{prime }=sum_{i=1}^{n}Y_{i} is a simple random walk with E(Yi) = 0, and ta is a stopping time given by t_{a}=inf left{ ngeq 1:n+S_{n}+zeta _{n}>aright}‎ where S_{n}=sum_{i=1}^{n}X_{i} is another simple random walk with E(Xi) = 0, and {zeta _{n},ngeq 1} is a sequence of ran...

Elementary Number Theory

Forward We start with the set of natural numbers, N = {1, 2, 3, . . .} equipped with the familiar addition and multiplication and assume that it satisfies the induction axiom. It allows us to establish division with a residue and the Euclid’s algorithm that computes the greatest commond divisor of two natural numbers. It also leads to a proof of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic: Every natu...
