Relativistic Acceleration of Magnetically Driven Jets

چکیده
We present an analytical model for describing highly relativistic acceleration of magnetically driven jets, within the framework of ideal MHD for cold, stationary and axisymmetric outflows. Our novel procedure is to treat the wind equation as an algebraic relation between the relativistic Alfvén Mach-number and the poloidal electric to toroidal magnetic field amplitudes ratio ξ. This allows us to obtain easily the wind solutions for trans-fast-magnetosonic flows, together with the required range of ξ. Then, to determine the spatial variation of ξ, we solve approximately the Grad-Shafranov equation applied to a jet flow ejected with a very large total specific energy E and confined within a very small opening angle. Our trans-fast-magnetosonic model provides a closed-form expression for the transition from a magnetically dominated flow to a kinetic-energy dominated one, which occurs in the sub-asymptotic region far beyond the light cylinder of the radius RL. Importantly, we find that the equipartition between magnetic and kinetic energies is realized at a cylindrical radius of order of RLE/c , and confirm that the further conversion of magnetic to kinetic energy proceeds logarithmically with distance in the asymptotic region. Finally, we discuss briefly the astrophysical implications of our model for jets originating from active galactic nuclei. Subject headings: MHD—relativity—galaxies: jets

Decay of the toroidal field in magnetically driven jets
A 3D simulation of a non-relativistic, magnetically driven jet propagating in a stratified atmosphere is presented, covering about three decades in distance and two decades in sideways expansion. The simulation captures the jet acceleration through the critical surfaces and the development of (kink-)instabilities driven by the free energy in the toroidal magnetic field component. The instabilit...
متن کاملMagnetic acceleration of ultra-relativistic GRB and AGN jets
We present numerical simulations of cold, axisymmetric, magnetically driven relativistic outflows. The outflows are initially sub-Alfvénic and Poynting flux-dominated, with total–to–rest-mass energy flux ratio up to μ ∼ 620. To study the magnetic acceleration of jets we simulate flows confined within a funnel with rigid wall of prescribed shape, which we take to be z ∝ r (in cylindrical coordin...
متن کاملGeneral Relativistic Simulations of Jet Formation in a Rapidly Rotating Black Hole Magnetosphere
To investigate the formation mechanism of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei and micro-quasars, we have developed a new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code in Kerr geometry. Here we report on the first numerical simulation of jet formation in a rapidly-rotating (a = 0.95) Kerr black hole magnetosphere. We study cases in which the Keplerian accretion disk is both co-rotating a...
متن کاملMagnetically-driven jets from Keplerian accretion discs
Non-relativistic, magnetically-driven jets are constructed by taking self-consistently into account the feedback on the underlying accretion disc. It is shown that such jets are mostly described by the ejection index ξ = d ln Ṁa/d ln r, which is a local measure of the disc ejection efficiency. This parameter is found to lie in a very narrow range, due to constraints imposed by both the disc ver...
متن کاملRole of Reconnection in AGN Jets
We discuss the possible role of reconnection in electro-magnetically dominated cores of relativistic AGN jets. We suggest that reconnection may proceed in a two-fold fashion: initial explosive collapse on the Alfvén time-scale of a current-carrying jet (which is of the order of the light crossing time) and subsequent slow quasi-steady reconnection. Sites of explosive collapse are associated wit...
