Anticonvulsants as mood stabilizers and adjuncts to antipsychotics: valproate, lamotrigine, carbamazepine, and oxcarbazepine and actions at voltage-gated sodium channels.

چکیده
Actions of certain anticonvulsants upon voltage-gated sodium channels may not only explain why they are effective mood stabilizers but may also explain why they could be useful adjuncts to antipsychotics for resistant psychosis.

متن کاملMood stabilizers and cognitive functions
Mood stabilizers are widely used for various indications particularly for bipolar disorders. For instance, lithium is an option in resistant depression cases, whereas valproate is used in impulse control disorders. Generally speaking, lithium and some anticonvulsants, such as valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, and oxcarbazepine are members of mood stabilizers. In addition, off-label use of ...
متن کاملThe role of sodium channels in the mechanism of action of antidepressants and mood stabilizers.
Antidepressant drugs modify in different ways the activity of neurons, by increasing monoamines levels and by modulating ion channels. Sodium channels are molecular targets for antiepileptic drugs, which can also be mood stabilizers (i.e. lamotrigine, topiramate, phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid). After a short overview on the sodium channels and the interaction with antidepressants and ...

The purpose of this review is to give useful information to guide clinicians when treating pregnant women affected by bipolar disorder. This review focuses on mood stabilizers including lithium, sodium valproate, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, gabapentin, lamotrigine and topiramate. Data have been extracted from a MEDLINE search. Data from prospective, retrospective and case-control studies as w...
متن کاملAntiepileptic drug mechanisms of action.
Established antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) decrease membrane excitability by interacting with neurotransmitter receptors or ion channels. AEDs developed before 1980 appear to act on sodium channels, gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors, or calcium channels. Benzodiazepines and barbiturates enhance GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition. Phenytoin (PHT), carbamazepine (CBZ), and possibly val...
