Multiple Time-Scale Monitoring to Address Dynamic Seasonality and Storm Pulses of Stream Water Quality in Mountainous Watersheds

چکیده
Rainfall variability and extreme events can amplify the seasonality and storm pulses of stream water chemistry in mountainous watersheds under monsoon climates. To establish a monitoring program optimized for identifying potential risks to stream water quality arising from rainfall variability and extremes, we examined water chemistry data collected on different timescales. At a small forested watershed, bi-weekly sampling lasted over two years, in comparison to three other biweekly sampling sites. In addition, high-frequency continuous measurements of pH, electrical conductivity, and turbidity were conducted in tandem with automatic water sampling at 2 h intervals during eight rainfall events. Biweekly monitoring showed that during the summer monsoon period, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), and dissolved ion concentrations generally decreased, but total suspended solids (TSS) slightly increased. A noticeable variation from the usual seasonal pattern was that DO levels substantially decreased during an extended drought. Bi-hourly storm event samplings exhibited large changes in the concentrations of TSS and particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC; DOC) during intense rainfall OPEN ACCESS

Effect of Soils on Water Quantity and Quality in Piedmont Forested Headwater Watersheds of North Carolina
Water quantity and quality data were compared from six headwater watersheds on two distinct soil formations, Carolina Slate Belt (CSB) and Triassic Basins (TB). CSB soils are generally thicker, less erodible, and contain less clay content than soils found in TB. TB generated significantly more discharge ⁄precipitation ratio than CSB (0.33 vs. 0.24) in the 2009 dormant season. In the 2009 growin...
متن کاملOpen storm: a complete framework for sensing and control of urban watersheds
Leveraging recent advances in technologies surrounding the Internet of Things, “smart” water systems are poised to transform water resources management by enabling ubiquitous real-time sensing and control. Recent applications have demonstrated the potential to improve flood forecasting, enhance rainwater harvesting, and prevent combined sewer overflows. However, adoption of smart water systems ...

[1] The hydrologic and biogeochemical responses of forested watersheds to inputs of rainfall and snowmelt can be an indicator of internal watershed function. In this study, we assess how the quantity and quality, both chemical and spectroscopic, of stream water DOC changes in response to a 6-day storm event during the wet season of 2003 in three small (<1 km) basins in the H. J. Andrews Experim...
متن کاملHydrologic and Water Quality Monitoring on Turkey Creek Watershed, Francis Marion National Forest, Sc
The re-initiation of a 7,260 ha forested watershed study on Turkey Creek, a 3 order stream, within the Francis Marion National forest in South Carolina, completes the development of a multi-scale hydrology and ecosystem monitoring framework in the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Hydrology and water quality monitoring began on the Santee Experimental Forest in the 1960’s, and represent an important long...
متن کاملThe effect of trout farm effluents on the water quality parameters of Zaringol Stream (Golestan, Iran) based on NSFWQI and WQI indexes
The aim of this study was to assess the potential impact of Trout farm effluents on water quality of Zaringol stream based on NSFWQI and WQI indexes. Some physicochemical water quality parameters were measured from 14 point during December 2009 to September 2010 seasonality. The average value of NSFWQI is 53.21 and it shows spatial and temporal variation. The maximum value or best water quality...
