چکیده

A stochastic program SP with solution value z∗ can be approximately solved by sampling n realizations of the program’s stochastic parameters, and by solving the resulting “approximating problem” for (x∗ n ; z ∗ n ). We show that, in expectation, z ∗ n is a lower bound on z∗ and that this bound monotonically improves as n increases. The rst result is used to construct con dence intervals on the optimality gap for any candidate solution x̂ to SP, e.g., x̂ = x∗ n . A sampling procedure based on common random numbers ensures nonnegative gap estimates and provides signi cant variance reduction over naive sampling on four test problems. c © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Assessing Solution Quality in Stochastic Programs

Determining whether a solution is of high quality (optimal or near optimal) is fundamental in optimization theory and algorithms. In this paper, we develop Monte Carlo sampling-based procedures for assessing solution quality in stochastic programs. Quality is defined via the optimality gap and our procedures’ output is a confidence interval on this gap. We review a multiple-replications procedu...

Bias Reduction in Assessing Solution Quality for Stochastic Programs

Monte Carlo sampling-based estimators of solution quality for stochastic programs are known to be biased. We present a method for reducing the bias of the estimators produced by the Averaged Two-Replication Procedure via a probability metrics approach, which can be done in polynomial time in sample size. We present analytic results for the newsvendor problem, and discuss further theoretical and...

Stochastic Assessment of Voltage Sags in Distribution Networks

This paper compares fault position and Monte Carlo methods as the most common methods in stochastic assessment of voltage sags. To compare their abilities, symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults with different probability distribution of fault positions along the lines are applied in a test system. The voltage sag magnitude in different nodes of test system is calculated. The problem with the...

Topics on Monte Carlo Simulation-Based Methods for Stochastic Optimization Problems: Stochastic Constraints and Variance Reduction Techniques

We provide an overview of two select topics in Monte Carlo simulationbased methods for stochastic optimization: problems with stochastic constraints and variance reduction techniques. While Monte Carlo simulation-based methods have been successfully used for stochastic optimization problems with deterministic constraints, there is a growing body of work on its use for problems with stochastic c...

Stopping Rules for a Class of Sampling-Based Stochastic Programming Algorithms

Decomposition and Monte Carlo sampling-based algorithms hold much promise for solving stochastic programs with many scenarios. A critical component of such algorithms is a stopping criterion to ensure the quality of the solution. In this paper, we develop a stopping rule theory for a class of algorithms that estimate bounds on the optimal objective function value by sampling. We provide rules f...
