12 . 2 The Utterance Relation

چکیده
The danger lurking around these examples is that we will derive a meaning that has Peter ordering up linguistic objects. We must avoid this pitfall, but we must also preserve the meaning difference: (1a) is true in a different class of situations than (1b). It will not do to strip off the quotation marks and gesture at a “metalinguistic” theory to explain why speakers easily find situations in which Peter orders “[ei]pricots” is semantically distinct from Peter orders “[æ]pricots”. The two sentences have clearly contrasting entailments. This is therefore clearly a semantic issue. My analysis capitalizes on the insight that “[ei]pricots” and “[æ]pricots” (with their quotation marks) have a dual semantics: they are natural language objects as well as properties. The sentences containing them in turn express two distinct propositions. In the case of (1a), we have at least the following:

Objective: recently, researchers have increasingly turned to study the relation between stuttering and utterance length. This study investigates the effect of utterance length on the amount of speech dysfluency in stuttering Persian-speaking children and adults in conversational speech. The obtained results can pave the way to reach a better understanding of stuttering of child and adults, as w...
متن کاملTHE CONTRAST - IN SENSITIVITY OF KNOWLEDGE ASCRIPTIONS Samuel
(1) Holmes knows that Mary stole the bicycle. Most philosophers of language with an interest in epistemology would have said, until very recently, that an utterance of (1) semantically expresses a proposition that is true if and only if Holmes (h) and the proposition that Mary stole the bicycle (p) are related by the binary relation of knowing (Kxy), so that the logical form of (1) is Khp. But ...
متن کاملRELATIONS BETWEEN UTTERANCE SPEED AND ARTICULATORY MOVEMENTS OKADOME, Takesi
A relation between utterance speed and the amount articulatory behavior for each phoneme reduces is investigated on the basis of the articulatory data taken by using a magnetic sensory system. The relation between the utterance speed and the change of the utterance timing for each phoneme is also focused on. Two linear-regression models are proposed: one predicts reduced articulatory movements ...
متن کاملQuestions in Discourse Lecture 2: Focus and Topic: Attending to Relevant Alternatives
There are many respects in which the conventional content of an utterance reflects speaker assumptions about the context of utterance and the relation between that context and the intended interpretation of the utterance. Taken together, these constitute what Vallduví (1992,1993) called the Information Packaging of the utterance, aka its Information Structure. Two central aspects of this Inform...
متن کاملMulti-layer mutually reinforced random walk with hidden parameters for improved multi-party meeting summarization
This paper proposes an improved approach of summarization for spoken multi-party interaction, in which a multi-layer graph with hidden parameters is constructed. The graph includes utterance-to-utterance relation, utterance-to-parameter weight, and speaker-to-parameter weight. Each utterance and each speaker are represented as a node in the utterance-layer and speaker-layer of the graph respect...
متن کاملThe role of utterance length and position in 3-year-olds' production of third person singular -s.
PURPOSE Evidence from children's spontaneous speech suggests that utterance length and utterance position may help explain why children omit grammatical morphemes in some contexts but not others. This study investigated whether increased utterance length (hence, increased grammatical complexity) adversely affects children's third person singular -s production in more controlled experimental con...
