Memory Recruitment: A Backward Idea About Masked Priming

چکیده

Accounts of priming typically assume that primes activate existing representations, thus prospectively altering target processing. In contrast, Bodner and Masson (1997) described a memory-recruitment account of priming in which the processing operations applied to primes—even masked primes—are encoded into a new memory instance that can be retrospectively recruited to contribute to target processing if the context and task conditions support recruitment. Our chapter updates three lines of research we have pursued since our last update (Masson & Bodner, 2003) in attempting to contrast various priming accounts. The first line examines when and why nonwords, which do not have existing representations, show masked priming. The second line examines when and why masked priming is sensitive to prime-proportion manipulations. The third line examines whether masked priming effects can be lasting. After summarizing some of the successes and failures of our backward account, we acknowledge Psychology of Learning and Motivation, Volume 61 # 2014 Elsevier Inc. Beyond binary judgments: prime validity modulates masked repetition priming in the naming task.

Bodner and Masson (2001) reported that masked repetition priming of lexical decisions is often greater when the repetition primes appear on a high, rather than a low, proportion of trials. They suggested that processing episodes are constructed for masked primes and that recruitment of those episodes is affected by the probability that the prime will be useful for processing the target. If cont...

Prime Validity Affects Masked Repetition Priming: Evidence for an Episodic Resource Account of Priming

Masked repetition priming in the lexical decision task was found to be greater when prime validity, defined as the proportion of repetition versus unrelated primes, was high (.8) rather than low (.2), even though primes were displayed for only 45 or 60 ms. Prime validity effects did not obtain when targets varied markedly from trial to trial with respect to processing difficulty. This variation...

Prelexical phonological coding of visual words in Dutch: automatic after all.

This paper addresses a previous claim (Brysbaert & Praet, 1992) that the use of prelexical phonology in visual word recognition is optional in the Dutch language. One backward masking experiment and two masked priming experiments are reported. The experimental task was perceptual identification. Pseudohomophones, graphemic controls, and unrelated controls of the target words were used as masks ...

Masked response priming across three prime proportions: a comparison of three accounts.

Unconscious priming is sensitive to contextual factors. The present study examined this adaptive process using masked arrow primes (<< or >>). Some targets required specific "fixed" left/right responses (<< or >>) and others required "free" left/right responses (<>). Different groups (n = 30 each) received response-congruent primes (SOA = 75 msec.) on 0.2, 0.5, or 0.8 of the fixed-response tria...

A Retrospective View of Masked Priming: Toward a Unified Account of Masked and Long-Term Repetition Priming

We propose a general, unified account of masked and long-term priming, based on the assumption that prime events create a memory resource that can be recruited to assist with subsequent target processing. This account is contrasted with the classical account of priming, in which it is assumed that a prime proactively creates a temporary change in the cognitive system (e.g., through spreading ac...
