چکیده

This paper explores the role of some basic notions in the study of non-monotonic reasoning, such as validity, logical consequence, context, rules and assumptions. It offers some considerations about the relation between non-monotonicity and the ideal of perfect validity in logical inference and the pertinence of taking into account human limitations. I propose that work on non-monotonic reasoning can benefit from new notions of inference, logicality and reason. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section presents the motivations for this analysis and can be skipped by people familiar with non-monotonic reasoning. The second section offers a taxonomy of terms in the NMR literature. The third section proposes to expand the notion of logicality in three important ways.

Is Intractability of Non-Monotonic Reasoning a Real Drawback?

Several studies about computational complexity of nonmonotonic reasoning (NMR) showed that nonmonotonic inference is significantly harder than classical, monotonic inference. This contrasts with the general idea that NMR can be used to make knowledge representation and reasoning simpler, not harder. In this paper we show that, to some extent, NMR fulfills the representation goal. In particular,...

(Some) Default and Non-Monotonic Aspects of Qualitative Spatial Reasoning: A Preliminary Report

We present some scenarios where default and/or nonmonotonic reasoning patterns are either necessary or useful for the modelling of dynamic spatial environments. The identified instances bear a direct relationship to the fundamental epistemological issues relevant to the frame and ramification problems; these are cases where a typical use of nonmonotonicity is necessary at a meta-theoretical or ...

All I Know: An Abridged Report1

Current approaches to formalizing non-monotonic reasoning using logics of belief require new metalogical properties over sets of sentences to be defined. This research attempts to show how some of these patterns of reasoning can be captured using only the classical notions of logic (satisfiability, validity, implication). This is done by extending a logic of belief so that it is possible to say...

Insufficiency of First Order Logic as a Database Query Language

The paper explores “logic+control” programming paradigm, applied to a relational domain. Even though it looks natural to utilize first order logic as a database query language, the paper reveals some shortcomings of such an approach. Particular attention is paid to: a) the semantics of negation and other non-monotonic reasoning notions, b) infinite or time consuming recursions, c) embedded PROL...

On Non-monotonic Conditional Reasoning

This note is concerned with a formal analysis of the problem of non-monotonic reasoning in intelligent systems, especially when the uncertainty is taken into account in a quantitative way. A firm connection between logic and probability is established by introducing conditioning notions by means of formal structures that do not rely on quantitative measures. The associated conditional logic, co...
