Cerebral oedema in episodic ataxia.

چکیده
We report a patient with episodic ataxia (presumably of type 2) who developed cerebral oedema secondary to a common infection (presumably viral). Cerebral oedema may be a part of the clinical spectrum of familial episodic ataxia and argues for an overlap with hemiplegic migraine. It is suggested to consider a diagnosis of episodic ataxia or familial hemiplegic migraine in catastrophic reactions to apparent trivial trauma or infection.

The Ca(2+) channelopathies caused by mutations of the CACNA1A gene that encodes the pore-forming subunit of the human Cav2.1 (P/Q-type) voltage-gated Ca(2+) channel include episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2). Although, in EA2 the emphasis has been on cerebellar dysfunction, patients also exhibit episodic, nonmotoric abnormalities involving the cerebral cortex. This study demonstrates episodic, low-fr...
متن کاملEarly seizures and cerebral oedema after trivial head trauma associated with the CACNA1A S218L mutation.
OBJECTIVE To study the clinical spectrum of CACNA1A S218L mutation carriers with special attention to "early seizures and cerebral oedema after trivial head trauma (ESCEATHT)", a combination of symptoms which resembles the "juvenile head trauma syndrome". PATIENTS AND METHODS In two patients with ESCEATHT all exons of CACNA1A were sequenced. Both patients also had hemiplegic migraine and atax...
متن کاملA Single Institutional Experience with Joubert Syndrome: The Past and Present
Joubert syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a variable combination of mental retardation, cerebellar ataxia, episodic hyperpnea, eye movement abnormalities, generalized hypotonia, and the molar-tooth sign visible on brain imaging. The number of reported cases has been escalating escalating all over the world since the description of the syndrome by the late French neuro...
متن کاملNon-Paroxysmal Progressive Ataxia in an Adult Due to a Novel Mutation of the CACNA1A Gene
Mutations of voltage gated calcium channels are commonly associated with episodic ataxia. There has been no case reports in the literature that describe anon-episodic presentation of ataxia in patients affected with this mutation. This current case report describes a 61-year-old female patient with progressive ataxia and mutations that commonly cause an episodic ataxia. ABBREVIATIONS EA2: Episo...

At any point 1-5 days following ascent to altitudes ≥2500 m, individuals are at risk of developing one of three forms of acute altitude illness: acute mountain sickness, a syndrome of nonspecific symptoms including headache, lassitude, dizziness and nausea; high-altitude cerebral oedema, a potentially fatal illness characterised by ataxia, decreased consciousness and characteristic changes on m...
