چکیده

We study the dynamics of filaments formed when certain materials undergo the isotropic-smectic A phase transition. The basis of this work is a solidification model derived from first principles, taking into account elastic, hydrodynamic and thermodynamic effects. The permeation process, which is solely responsible for the growth of the filament, is analyzed in detail. Various characteristics of the filament, such as growth rates, velocity profile inside the filament and transport along the filament, are calculated by studying the asymptotic limit of a slender body problem. We also derive, in this limit, the equation governing the dynamics of the centerline of the filament. Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, New York, NY 10012. Thermodynamics, transition dynamics, and texturing in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals with mesogens exhibiting a direct isotropic/smectic-A transition

Experimental studies of phase equilibrium and growth morphologies of novel polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) mixtures of PS (polystyrene) and liquid crystals that exhibit a direct isotropic/smecticA (lamellar) mesophase transition were performed for PS/10CB (decyl-cyanobiphenyl) and PS/12CB (dodecyl-cyanobiphenyl). The studies were performed using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and di...

Modelling elasticity and memory effects in liquid crystalline elastomers by molecular dynamics simulations

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid crystal elastomer of side-chain architecture. The network is formed from a melt of 28 molecules each having a backbone of 100 hydrocarbon monomers, to which 50 side chains are attached in a syndiotactic way. Crosslinking is performed in the smectic A phase. We observe an increase of the smectic–isotropic phase transition temperature of abo...

Landau Model of the Smectic C - Isotropic Phase Transition

We propose a Landau model to describe the smectic C isotropic phase transition. A general Landau theory for the coupled orientational and translational order parameters and including the tilt angle is developed. The conditions for the smectic C isotropic phase transition and the stability conditions of the smectic C phase are calculated. On the basis of this model it is argued that the smectic ...

Surface freezing and a two-step pathway of the isotropic-smectic phase transition in colloidal rods.

We study the kinetics of the isotropic-smectic phase transition in a colloidal rod/polymer mixture by visualizing individual smectic layers. First, we show that the bulk isotropic-smectic phase transition is preceded by a surface freezing transition in which a quasi-two-dimensional smectic phase wets the isotropic-nematic interface. Next, we identify a two-step kinetic pathway for the formation...

Simulation of spherulite growth using a comprehensive approach to modeling the first-order isotropic/smectic-A mesophase transition

A comprehensive modeling and simulation study of the first-order isotropic/smectic-A transition is presented and applied to phase diagram computation and two-dimensional spherulite growth. An approach based on nonlinear optimization, that incorporates experimental data (from 12CB, dodecyl-cyanobiphenyl), is used to determine physically realistic model parameters. These parameters are then used ...
