چکیده

BACKGROUND Non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are frequent, increase the patients' disability and have an important negative impact on their quality of life. METHODS We used a Dutch translation of the Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire (NMSQuest) to identify NMS in a population of 215 Belgian PD patients. RESULTS A median number of 8 NMS was reported per patient. Urinary urgency (59.2 %), nocturia (56.9 %), insomnia (45.8 %), attention problems (45.5 %) and orthostatism (41.2 %) were the most frequently denoted NMS. A higher number of NMS was present with more severe Hoehn and Yahr stages. Longer disease duration was associated with more NMS. Furthermore, clinical markers of disease progression were also associated with a higher number of NMS. However, early-onset patients (< 50 years) reported less NMS than late-onset patients after correction for disease duration. Interestingly, in early-onset patients we observed more unexplained pain and more hyperhydrosis. CONCLUSION We confirm the high prevalence of NMS in PD patients. A long disease duration and more severe disease are associated with a higher number of NMS. Importantly, even if late-onset patients generally report more NMS, unexplained pain and hyperhydrosis are more frequent in early-onset patients.

Detection of motor and non-motor symptoms of end-of dose wearing-off in Parkinson's disease using a dedicated questionnaire: a Belgian multicenter survey.

In this report the usefulness of a dedicated questionnaire to detect end-of-dose wearing-off (EODWO) fluctuations in PD was studied. One hundred and sixty patients were administered an 18-item questionnaire encompassing both motor and non-motor phenomena. One hundred and eight (86%) reported EODWO, defined as the occurrence of at least one symptom improving by drug intake. Motor phenomena were ...

The effect of circuit resistance training on body composition and physical function in patients with Parkinson's disease

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is the second age-related neurodegenerative disease that is clinically characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of circuit resistance training on motor neuromuscular function in patients with Parkinson's disease. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental research, 20 patients with Parkinson's di...

Neural Substrates of Motor and Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson’s Disease: A Resting fMRI Study

BACKGROUND Recently, non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) have been considered crucial factors in determining a patient's quality of life and have been proposed as the predominant features of the premotor phase. Researchers have investigated the relationship between non-motor symptoms and the motor laterality; however, this relationship remains disputed. This study investigated the ne...

Evaluation of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease: An underestimated necessity.

BACKGROUND AND AIM Νon-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) are very common and contribute to the severity of patient's disability. We evaluated the frequency of nonmotor symptoms in patients with PD and we explored the influence of disease characteristics on the presence of these symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred sixty six patients and sixty six matched controls were enrolled ...

Non-Motor Off Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease

The aim of this study is to elucidate the clinical spectrum and frequency of non-motor symptoms during off periods (NMOS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with motor fluctuation. We compared clinical characteristics between PD patients with motor symptoms only (M-off) and those with both motor and non-motor symptoms (NM-off) during off periods. The association of NMOS with parkinsonian clin...
