Preliminary Classification Results of Simulated Radarsat-2 Polarimetric Sea Ice Data

چکیده
RESUME When RADARSAT-2 is in operation it will be the first commercial spaceborne sensor capable of providing fully polarimetric data. The difference from airborne polarimetric data is mainly due to different sensor specifications and the differences in altitude. Using the airborne data, we simulate RADARSAT-2 standard and fine mode polarimetric data of sea ice and investigate the potential of ice classification algorithms. The increased noise level in combination with the lower resolution of the simulated data causes a decrease in classification quality compared to the airborne result and a change of classification strategy is required. However, the satellite polarimetric data does contain more information than the corresponding single polarization data, and can be exploited by new data processing techniques.

Potential of RADARSAT-2 for Sea Ice Classification
Polarimetric data acquired by the CCRS CV-580 airborne SAR is used to assess the capability of RADARSAT-2 for operational sea ice classification. The information content of the polarimetric data is illustrated by showing how specific scattering mechanisms are portrayed by the entropy, anisotropy and α-angle features. Ice type classes are derived from the full pol data set using a complex Wishar...
متن کاملInvestigation of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness using Space-borne Polarimetric SAR data
Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been widely used to produce ice concentration (type), ice motion, ice charting (operational route planning), and iceberg detection. Recent availability of polarimetric SAR sensors (e.g., TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS PALSAR) enables us to explore the full potential of polarimetric data to derive sea ice information. Among the many sea ice ...
متن کاملOn the Classification of Sea Ice Types Using Simulated Radarsat Constellation Mission (rcm) Compact Polarimetric Sar Parameters
A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system with hybrid-polarity architecture constitutes a significant advancement in the field of radar remote sensing. This new architecture system is a Compact Polarimetric (CP) SAR system which transmits a circular polarization and receives two mutually coherent orthogonal linear polarizations. This SAR system reduces some of the design constraints of the spaceb...
متن کاملRetrieval of the thickness of undeformed sea ice from simulated C-band compact polarimetric SAR images
In this paper we introduce a parameter for the retrieval of the thickness of undeformed first-year sea ice that is specifically adapted to compact polarimetric (CP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The parameter is denoted as the “CP ratio”. In model simulations we investigated the sensitivity of the CP ratio to the dielectric constant, ice thickness, ice surface roughness, and radar inci...
متن کاملPotential of RADARSAT-2 data for operational sea ice monitoring
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from RADARSAT-1 are an important operational data source for several ice centres around the world. Whereas RADARSAT-1 is only capable of acquiring data at a single polarization, RADARSAT-2 will be capable of acquiring dual-polarization data in many wide-swath modes (most importantly ScanSAR) and fully polarimetric SAR data in a narrow 25-km swath mode. In thi...
