Wind field retrieval from SAR compared with scatterometer wind field during ERS Tandem phase

چکیده

Several recent works [such as Vachon et al. 1996, Scoon et al. 1996 and Korsbakken et al. 1997] report promising results when wind retrieval models developed for the wind scatterometer (WSC) are applied to SAR data. The general conclusion from these works is that more validation is needed since the available in-situ material is relatively limited. A dataset from the ERS-1/2 Tandem phase allows for a new type of validation study of the wind retrieval models when applied to SAR, and validate the results towards the scatterometer derived wind field with 30 minutes lag. The orbit configuration and the wide swath of the WSC cause an overlap at latitudes greater than about 63°. In this work we discuss the major difference of two C-band models and their performance and the novel comparison of SAR and WSC wind field. In the first section we give a brief overview of the data used followed by a discussion of stationary in the wind field before the results are presented and, finally, a summary is given.

Global wind speed retrieval from SAR

The global availability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wave mode data from the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2, as well as ENVISAT, allows for the investigation of the wind field over the ocean on a global and continuous basis. For this purpose, 27 days of ERS-2 SAR wave mode data were processed, representing a total of 34 310 imagettes of size 10 km 5 km, available ...

Wind retrieval from RADARSAT SAR images: Selection of a suitable C-band HH polarization wind retrieval model

A standardized analysis of wind retrieval collocations from a set of ERS (C-band VV polarization) and RADARSAT (C-band HH polarization) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) open ocean images is presented. The field validation opportunities, carried out over the past eight years, provided collocated (in time and space) in situ validation data consisting of wind vector and ocean wave spectrum measureme...

Sea Surface Wind Retrievals from SIR-C/X-SAR Data: A Revisit

The Geophysical Model Function (GMF) XMOD1 provides a linear algorithm for sea surface wind field retrievals for the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR). However, the relationship between the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and the sea surface wind speed, wind direction and incidence angles is non-linear. Therefore, in this paper, XMOD1 is revisited us...

Interannual Variability in Weddell Sea Ice from Ers Wind Scatterometer

ERS-1/2 SAR and Wind Scatterometer data are analyzed together with DMSP SSM/I microwave radiometer data to investigate interannual variability in Weddell Sea ice and summer melt signatures during the period 1992-1997. Simultaneous SAR and Scatterometer images were obtained during a February 1995 cruise of the H.M.S. Endurance and aerial photographs collected for validation of the satellite obse...
