Evaluation of IP QoS Strategies for Wireless Access Networks

The range of different applications used over the Internet is growing fast. Many new applications require a better than best-effort IP forwarding service. Deployment of mechanisms to offer Quality of Service (QoS) has not advanced, partially due over-provisioned backbones. On the end-to-end path, the bottlenecks are often in the access networks connecting the communicating parties to the backbones. This paper presents a QoS architecture for access networks. The design is based on a combination of IETF QoS architectures and a new protocol called Localized RSVP. We show various performance studies run on a Linux-based testbed, and analyze the behavior and operation of the architecture.
