چکیده

The germin protein family is comprised of two main subgroups in plants, oxalate oxidases (OXOs) and germin-like proteins (GLPs). These proteins are implicated in a variety of plant processes including germination, development, pollen formation, and response to abiotic and biotic stress. Here, we examine the phylogenetic relationships and functional diversity of the germin gene family across diverse genera, and then focus on rice (Oryza sativa) as amodel. In general, germin genes are expressed in all tissue types and are induced by biotic and/or abiotic stresses. In rice, many of the stress-induced germin genes physically co-localize with quantitative trait loci (QTL) for disease resistance, and emerging evidence suggests that small RNAs may regulate their transcript abundance. We analyze the extensive sequence, gene expression and functional data for germin family proteins and relate them to QTL map locations to predict additional candidate germin genes for future crop improvement. 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Germins and germin like proteins: an overview.

Molecular investigations during wheat germination have revealed unique developmentally regulated proteins, designated as germins, which show remarkable resistance to broad specificity proteases and to dissociation in SDS. Germins in cereals have an oxalate oxidase activity, which generates H2O2 from the oxidative breakdown of oxalate thereby playing a significant role in plant development and d...

The draft genome of Tibetan hulless barley reveals adaptive patterns to the high stressful Tibetan Plateau.

The Tibetan hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum), also called "Qingke" in Chinese and "Ne" in Tibetan, is the staple food for Tibetans and an important livestock feed in the Tibetan Plateau. The diploid nature and adaptation to diverse environments of the highland give it unique resources for genetic research and crop improvement. Here we produced a 3.89-Gb draft assembly of Tibetan h...

Members of the germin-like protein family in Brassica napus are candidates for the initiation of an oxidative burst that impedes pathogenesis of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Germin-like proteins (GLPs) are defined by their sequence homology to germins from barley and are present ubiquitously in plants. Analyses of corresponding genes have revealed diverse functions of GLPs in plant development and biotic and abiotic stresses. This study describes the identification of a family of 14 germin-like genes from Brassica napus (BnGLP) designated BnGLP1-BnGLP14 and investi...

Determination of adaptive responses of peanut genotypes and patterns of genotype × location interaction using the CSM-CROPGRO-Peanut model

The adaptive responses of crop genotypes and patterns of genotype x location (G x L) interaction are important to crop improvement as they are the basis for selection for specific adaptation and for elucidation of the causes of G x L interaction. Their legitimate assessment, however, requires yield data for the test genotypes for a large number of sites and over multiple years. Such data are se...

Nitrogen management strategies for maize production systems: Experimental data and crop modeling

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important crop among Brazilian smallholder farmers, who are also responsible for 40% of the poultry and egg production in the country.Although poultry litter is considered a potential pollutant, if properly stabilized anddistributed in the field it can be used as a source of nitrogen for maize production. In this study, the response of maize to mineral fertilizer and pou...
