Notes on Calculating Computer Performance

چکیده
This report explains what it means to characterize the performance of a computer, and which methods are appropriate and inappropriate for the task. The most widely used metric is the performance on the SPEC benchmark suite of programs; currently, the results of running the SPEC benchmark suite are compiled into a single number using the geometric mean. The primary reason for using the geometric mean is that it preserves values across normalization, but unfortunately, it does not preserve total run time, which is probably the figure of greatest interest when performances are being compared. Cycles per Instruction (CPI) is another widely used metric, but this method is invalid, even if comparing machines with identical clock speeds. Comparing CPI values to judge performance falls prey to the same problems as averaging normalized values. In general, normalized values must not be averaged and instead of the geometric mean, either the harmonic or the arithmetic mean is the appropriate method for averaging a set running times. The arithmetic mean should be used to average times, and the harmonic mean should be used to average rates (1/time). A number of published SPECmarks are recomputed using these means to demonstrate the effect of choosing a favorable algorithm.

Design of a Multiplier for Similar Base Numbers Without Converting Base Using a Data Oriented Memory
One the challenging in hardware performance is to designing a high speed calculating unit. The higher of calculations speeds in a computer system will be pointed out in terms of performance. As a result, designing a high speed calculating unit is of utmost importance. In this paper, we start design whit this knowledge that one multiplier made of several adder and one divider made of several su...
متن کاملTv and or Fm Transmitting Antennas Desien Using Computer Graphic System (RESEARCH NOTES)
The purpose of this paper is three fold. First, the major theoretical pattern relationships of TV and/or FM transmitting antennas are dealt with. Secend, the computer calculation method and designing of such patterns using the given relationships. And third, a method in which a computer graphic system can be used to design such antennas for a specific pattern is introduced and its results are p...
متن کاملOperational Analysis of Queueing Networks
In typical validations of computer performance models, analysist interpret the ptja) of queueing networks as time-proportions during which a given network state n is observed. They parameterize performance calculations with directly measured device service time functions and job device visit counts. Three operational assumptions constitute a minimal set of assumptions for calculating these p(n)...
متن کاملOn the Optimum Directivity of Uniformly Spaced Broadside Arrays of Parallel Half-Wave Dipoles (RESEARCH NOTES)
The nominal directivity for uniformly spaced broadside parallel half-wave dipoles associated with a uniform excitation is evaluated. The amplitude distribution for an optimized directivity is then obtained for different numbers of elements with the separations between the dipoles as a variable. The optimum and nominal directivities are compared for different spacings of the elements. While thes...
متن کاملImproving LNMF Performance of Facial Expression Recognition via Significant Parts Extraction using Shapley Value
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) algorithms have been utilized in a wide range of real applications. NMF is done by several researchers to its part based representation property especially in the facial expression recognition problem. It decomposes a face image into its essential parts (e.g. nose, lips, etc.) but in all previous attempts, it is neglected that all features achieved by NMF ...
