Perceptual Quality Assessment of Packet- Based Vocal Conversations over Wireless Networks: Methodologies and Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
In this chapter, the authors describe the intrinsic needs to effectively integrate interactive vocal conversations over heterogeneous networks including packetand circuitbased networks. The requirement to harmonize transport networks is discussed and a foreseen architecture multi -operators and -services is presented. Moreover, envisaged remedies to the ever increasing network complexity are also summarized. Subjective and objective methodologies to evaluate voice quality under listening and conversational conditions are thoroughly described. In addition, softwareand emulationbased frameworks developed in order to evaluate and improve voice quality are rigorously described. This chapter stresses parametric model-based assessment algorithms due to their ability to be useful for on-line network management. In particular, the authors describe parametric assessment algorithms over last-hop wireless Telecom networks and packet-based networks. The last part of this chapter describes several management applications which consider users’ preferences and providers’ needs. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-61520-680-3.ch018

The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...
متن کاملAdaptive playout scheduling algorithm tailored for real-time packet-based voice conversations over wireless ad-hoc networks
The effective provision of real-time, packet-based voice conversations over multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks faces several stringent constraints not found in conventional packet-based networks. Indeed, MANETs (mobile ad-hoc networks) are characterized by mobility of all nodes, bandwidth-limited channel, unreliable wireless transmission medium, etc. This environment will surely induce a high d...

Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSNs) involve a convergence of biosensors, wireless communication and networks technologies. WBSN enables real-time healthcare services to users. Wireless sensors can be used to monitor patients’ physical conditions and transfer real time vital signs to the emergency center or individual doctors. Wireless networks are subject to more packet loss and congestion. T...
متن کاملNIDA: A Parametric Vocal Quality Assessment Algorithm over Transient Connections
This paper presents NIDA, a Non-Intrusive Disconnection-aware vocal quality assessment Algorithm. NIDA accurately estimates vocal perceived quality over wireless data networks by discriminating the perceptual effect of a single random packet loss, 2-4 consecutive packet losses (burst) stemming from contentions, and discontinuity entailed by transient loss of connectivity. NIDA properly accounts...
متن کاملA Fuzzy Based Approach for Rate Control in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks
Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) undergo congestion when a link (or a node) becomes overpopulated in terms of incoming packets. In WMSNs this happens especially in upstream nodes where all incoming packets meet and directed to the sink node. Congestion in networks, if not handled properly, might lead to congestion collapse which deteriorates the quality of service (QoS). Therefore, i...
