Breeding biology of Physalaemus centralis Bokermann, 1962 (Anura: Leptodactylidae) in southeastern Brazil

چکیده
Physalaemus centralis is widely distributed in areas of cerrado vegetation in South America. Here we describe the temporal variation in activity and explore eventual effects of climatic conditions on activity, calling sites, territorial behaviour; courtship behaviour, egg clutches and tadpole development of P. centralis in southeastern Brazil. Field observations were made from January 1996 to February 1997. Vocalisations and reproductive activity were restricted to the rainy season, with a peak of activity in October. The number of calling males was significantly correlated with relative humidity, mean air temperature, and air pressure values of the previous day. Courtship is simple and did not include any physical contact before amplexus; furthermore, females seem to choose their mates. Amplectant pairs were observed from mid-October to mid-December. Most foam nests observed were anchored within the vegetation. The number of eggs in the foam nests ranged from 1549 to 2405. Tadpoles were mainly found in shallow parts of the water from October to midJanuary. The reproductive biology of P. centralis is similar to that of closely related species of the P. cuvieri group, suggesting conservatism in this lineage.

Chromosomal analysis of Physalaemus kroyeri and Physalaemus cicada (Anura, Leptodactylidae)
All the species of Physalaemus Fitzinger, 1826 karyotyped up until now have been classified as 2n = 22. The species of the Physalaemus cuvieri group analyzed by C-banding present a block of heterochromatin in the interstitial region of the short arm of pair 5. Physalaemus cicada Bokermann, 1966 has been considered to be a member of the Physalaemus cuvieri species group, although its interspecif...
متن کاملComparison of Morphology and Calls of Two Cryptic Species of Physalaemus (anura: Leiuperidae)
We analyzed and described quantitative differences in morphology and calls of Physalaemus petersi and P. freibergi, both members of the monophyletic Physalaemus pustulosus species group. We found significant differences between the two species in both morphometric and call parameters. Physalaemus petersi has proportionately longer legs and a narrower dorsum and head than P. freibergi. The calls...
متن کاملDiet of Physalaemus cf. cicada (Leptodactylidae) and Bufo granulosus (Bufonidae) in a semideciduous forest.
We determined the diet of the two most abundant anuran species which occur in the litter of a semideciduous forest (Lençóis, Bahia, Brazil), Physalaemus cf. cicada and Bufo granulosus in the dry and rainy seasons. Pitfall traps were used to collect anuran and invertebrate fauna, which showed the availability of prey in the environment. Physalaemus cf. cicada was present in both seasons and Bufo...

Bokermannohyla nanuzae (Bokermann & Sazima 1973) and B. feioi (Napoli & Caramaschi 2004) belong to the B. cir-cumdata species group. The type locality of the former is Serra do Cipó, Espinhaço mountain range, and of the latter is Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Mantiqueira mountain range, both in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Differences on dorsal draw-ing pattern of adults, oral disc morphology of...
متن کاملComparative cytogenetics of Physalaemus albifrons and Physalaemus cuvieri species groups (Anura, Leptodactylidae)
Recently, Physalaemus albifrons (Spix, 1824) was relocated from the Physalaemus cuvieri group to the same group as Physalaemus biligonigerus (Cope, 1861), Physalaemus marmoratus (Reinhardt & Lütken, 1862) and Physalaemus santafecinus Barrio, 1965. To contribute to the analysis of this proposition, we studied the karyotypes of Physalaemus albifrons, Physalaemus santafecinus and three species of ...
