چکیده
In this lecture we are going to address a question related to expansion. We choose an element in a product space and change each coordinate with a small probability. How large is the probability that starting in a given small set A, the new point lands in another small set B? We are going to prove a lower bound on this probability that depends on the relative densities of such sets. To this end we introduce new tools concerning ‖·‖p with p < 1.

A simple reduction from a biased measure on the discrete cube to the uniform measure
We show that certain statements related to the Fourier-Walsh expansion of functions with respect to a biased measure on the discrete cube can be deduced from the respective results for the uniform measure by a simple reduction. In particular, we present simple generalizations to the biased measure μp of the Bonami-Beckner hypercontractive inequality, and of Talagrand’s lower bound on the size o...
متن کاملA tight quantitative version of Arrow's impossibility theorem
The well-known Impossibility Theorem of Arrow asserts that any Generalized Social Welfare Function (GSWF) with at least three alternatives, which satisfies Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) and Unanimity and is not a dictatorship, is necessarily nontransitive. In 2002, Kalai asked whether one can obtain the following quantitative version of the theorem: For any > 0, there exists δ =...
متن کاملQuantum boolean functions
In this paper we introduce the study of quantum boolean functions, which are unitary operators f whose square is the identity: f = I. We describe several generalisations of well-known results in the theory of boolean functions, including quantum property testing; a quantum version of the Goldreich-Levin algorithm for finding the large Fourier coefficients of boolean functions; and two quantum v...

متن کاملMore on the influence of variables on boolean functions
In this lecture we will look at the following natural question– do there exist balanced boolean functions f on n variables such that for every variable x the influence of x on f is “small” and how small can this bound be made? (“Balanced” means that Pr(f = 0) = Pr(f = 1) = 12 but Ef = α for some α bounded away from 0 and 1 is just as interesting.) In the last lecture we showed that for the “tri...
