چکیده

We present column density measurements of the HD molecule in the interstellar gas toward 17 Galactic stars. The values for the seven most heavily reddened sightlines, with E(B − V) = 0.38–0.72, are derived from observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The other ten values are from a reanalysis of spectra obtained with Copernicus. In all cases, high-resolution ground-based observations of K  and/or the CH molecule were used to constrain the gas velocity structure and to correct for saturation effects. Comparisons of the column densities HD, CH, CN, and K  in these 17 sightlines indicate that HD is most tightly correlated with CH. Stringent lower limits to the interstellar D/H ratio, derived from the HD/2H2 ratio, range from 3.7 × 10−7 to 4.3 × 10−6. Our results also suggest that the HD/H2 ratio increases with the molecular fraction f (H2) and that the interstellar D/H ratio might be obtained from HD by probing clouds with f (H2) ∼ 1. Finally, we note an apparent relationship between the molecular fractions of hydrogen and deuterium.

Direct Measurement of the Ratio of Carbon Monoxide to Molecular Hydrogen in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

We have used archival far-ultraviolet spectra from observations made by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE ) to determine the column densities and rotational excitation temperatures for carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen, respectively, along the lines of sight to 23 Galactic O and B stars. The si...

Evidence for Correlated Titanium and Deuterium Depletion in the Galactic Ism

Current measurements indicate that the deuterium abundance in diffuse interstellar gas varies spatially by a factor of ∼4 among sightlines extending beyond the Local Bubble. One plausible explanation for the scatter is the variable depletion of D onto dust grains. To test this scenario, we have obtained high signal-to-noise, high resolution profiles of the refractory ion Ti II along seven Galac...

A New Constraint on the Escape Fraction in Distant Galaxies Using Γ-ray Burst Afterglow Spectroscopy

We describe a new method to measure the escape fraction fesc of ionizing radiation from distant star-forming galaxies using the afterglow spectra of long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs). Optical spectra of GRB afterglows allow us to evaluate the optical depth of the host ISM, according to the neutral hydrogen column density N(H I) observed along the sightlines toward the star-forming regions where...

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O I column densities from HST/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Å intersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H I)+2N(H2)] using HST/STIS observations of Lyman-α and FUSE observations of molec...

Co and C 2 Absorption toward W40 Irs 1a

The H II region W40 harbors a small group of young, hot stars behind roughly 9 magnitudes of visual extinction. We have detected gaseous carbon monoxide (CO) and diatomic carbon (C2) in absorption toward the star W 40 IRS 1a. The 2-0 R0, R1, and R2 lines of 12CO at 2.3 μm were measured using the CSHELL on the NASA IR Telescope Facility (with upper limits placed on R3, R4, and R5) yielding an NC...
