Handout III for the lecture course QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

چکیده

Since term is coming to an end soon, and due to some lectures I had to skip, I cannot present all the material in the lecture course I initially had planned. Thus, I collect here briefly some stuff on the quantization of the Dirac field in the canonical formalism, which I have not (anymore) time to present in the lecture. The main difficulty or difference in quantizing a fermion compared to quantizing a boson arises from the experimental fact that the wave function of two electrons is antisymmetric. As a consequence, electrons obey the Pauli principle which states that no two identical fermions can occupy identical quantum states, i.e. possess the same quantum numbers and energy. is indeed equivalent to the fact that the quantization of fermions is done with anti-commutation relations rather than commutation relations for the creation and annihilation operators. This is the first step towards the spin-statistics theorem.
