چکیده

We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in professional piano players and control subjects during an overtrained complex ®nger movement task using a blood oxygenation level dependent echo-planar gradient echo sequence. Activation clusters were seen in primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, premotor cortex and superior parietal lobule. We found signi®cant differences in the extent of cerebral activation between both groups with piano players having a smaller number of activated voxels. We conclude that, due to long-term motor practice a different cortical activation pattern can be visualized in piano players. For the same movements lesser neurons need to be recruited. The different volume of the activated cortical areas might therefore re ̄ect the different effort necessary for motor performance in both groups. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. To determine the role of cytokines in the nervous system, we examined the effect of interleukin-12(IL-12) on the nerve regeneration of mouse superior cervical ganglion cells (SCG). IL-12 enhanced the neurite outgrowth in a concentrationdependent manner. Immunocytochemical studies demonstrated the expression of IL-12 receptors in neuronal bodies and neurites. The mRNA expression of IL-12 recepto...

This study sought to analyze the postural responses induced by separately or simultaneously vibrating with different frequencies the forefoot and rear foot zones of both soles in standing subjects. Stimulating each zone separately resulted in spatially oriented body tilts; their amplitude and velocity varied linearly according to the frequency, and their direction was always opposite to the pla...

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while subjects monitored a visually presented sequence of stimuli that provided information about both a temporal pattern (rhythm) and a spatial pattern, and responded to rhythmical or spatial deviants. A third task, which required the monitoring of the same sequence for screen flickers served as a perceptual baseline condition and controlled for re...

In the ̄occulus of pigeons, as in other species, there are two major types of Purkinje cell responses to rotational optokinetic stimuli. One type prefers rotation about the vertical axis (VA neurons) whereas the other prefers rotation about an horizontal axis oriented at 1358 ipsilateral azimuth (H-135 neurons). In this study, we injected the retrograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B into the V...

We examined the change of corticostriatal glutamatergic neuronal transmission in striatal slices of methamphetamine (MAP)-sensitized rats in vitro. Tetanic stimulation induced long-term depression (LTD) of the ®eld potential in the striatum of saline-treated rats. However, it induced long-term potentiation (LTP) in the striatum of MAP-sensitized rats. This LTP was signi®cantly suppressed by a N...
