Beam-Ion Instability in PEP-II
نویسندگان
چکیده
The instability in the PEP-II electron ring has been observed while reducing the clearing gap in the bunch train. We study the ion effects in the ring summarizing existing theories of the beam-ion interaction, comparing them with observations, and estimating effect on luminosity in the saturation regime. Considering the gap instability we suggest that the instability is triggered by the beam-ion instability, and discuss other mechanisms pertinent to the instability. 0.

Recent Experiments on the Fast Beam-ion Instability and a Study of Potential Cures at the Als and Pep-ii
We report our latest experiments on the fast beam{ion instability (FBII) 1; 2) at the Advanced Light Source (ALS). In October 1997, we studied the pressure dependence of the instability, and tested the e ectiveness of two proposed cures: a large chromaticity and additional gaps in the bunch train. We also describe a very preliminary observation of increased rms motion along the PEP-II electron ...
متن کاملEffects of Beam Filling Pattern on Beam Ion Instability and Beam Loading in Pep-x*
A proposed high-brightness synchrotron light source (PEP-X) is under design at SLAC. The 4.5-GeV PEP-X storage ring has four theoretical minimum emittance (TME) cells to achieve the very low emittance and two double-bend achromat (DBA) cells to provide spaces for IDs. Damping wigglers will be installed in zero-dispersion straights to reduce the emittance below 0.1 nm. Ion induced beam instabili...
متن کاملSuppression of the Beam Instability Related to Electron Cloud at Pep-ii B-factory*
PEP-II B-factory operates at a record high circulating current currently ~2.5 A in the positron ring. Electron cloud effects became apparent [1] when the positron ring current reached ~ 0.7 A with a bunch current ~1.5 mA. Initially, electron cloud induced beam instabilities significantly limited collider luminosity [2]. However, suppression of the electron cloud related beam instabilities have ...
متن کاملSimulation of Head-Tail Instability Caused by Electron Cloud in the Positron Ring at PEP-II∗
The head-tail instability caused by an electron cloud in positron storage rings is studied numerically using a simple model. In the model, the positron beam is longitudinally divided into many slices that have a fixed transverse size. The centroid of each slice evolves dynamically according to the interaction with a two-dimensional electron cloud at a given azimuthal location in the ring and a ...
متن کاملThe Electron Cloud Instability at Pep-ii
The electron cloud instability (ECI) at PEP-II enlarges the positron beam size at high currents and reduces the luminosity. The electrons for this instability come from multipacting electrons in the straight section vacuum chambers and, perhaps, photo-emission and secondary emission of electrons from the vacuum ante-chambers in the arcs. Solenoid and transverse field magnets have been placed ov...
