چکیده

A neurocomputational model is presented for gure-ground discrimination by relative motion. In the model, the correlation type of elementary motion detectors (EMDs), an oscillatory neural network for motion perception and a selective attention module are involved. It is shown that through the oscillatory amplitude and frequency encoding and selective synchronization of phase oscillators, a perfectly camou-aged textured gure can be successfully discriminated from its identically textured background by relative motion alone. network (ONN), multilayer network of phase oscillators.

Neurons forming optic glomeruli compute figure-ground discriminations in Drosophila.

Many animals rely on visual figure-ground discrimination to aid in navigation, and to draw attention to salient features like conspecifics or predators. Even figures that are similar in pattern and luminance to the visual surroundings can be distinguished by the optical disparity generated by their relative motion against the ground, and yet the neural mechanisms underlying these visual discrim...

Figure-Ground Discrimination in the Visual System of Drosophila melanogaster

Drosophila inelanog~lster is able to detect a small visual object hidden in a background of identical texture, as long as there is relative motion between their retinal images. The properties of figurc-ground discrimination in the walking fly are studied under experimental conditions where the positions of figure and ground oscillate sinusoidally with similar frequency and similar amplitude but...

Asymmetric Processing of Visual Motion for Simultaneous Object and Background Responses

Visual object fixation and figure-ground discrimination in Drosophila are robust behaviors requiring sophisticated computation by the visual system, yet the neural substrates remain unknown. Recent experiments in walking flies revealed object fixation behavior mediated by circuitry independent from the motion-sensitive T4-T5 cells required for wide-field motion responses. In tethered flight exp...

Response of Buildings with Inclined First-Story Columns to Near-Fault Ground Motion

In this paper a simple model of a three story building with inclined first-story columns has presented. The stories are supposed to be rigid and are connected to axially rigid mass less columns by elasto-plastic rotational springs and linear rotational dampers. The considered model is subjected to horizontal component of fault normal pulse with different magnitudes and the governed nonlinear di...

Figure–ground discrimination behavior in Drosophila. I. Spatial organization of wing-steering responses

The behavioral algorithms and neural subsystems for visual figure-ground discrimination are not sufficiently described in any model system. The fly visual system shares structural and functional similarity with that of vertebrates and, like vertebrates, flies robustly track visual figures in the face of ground motion. This computation is crucial for animals that pursue salient objects under the...
