Ensemble Equivalence for Distinguishable Particles

چکیده
Statistics of distinguishable particles has become relevant in systems of colloidal particles and in the context of applications of statistical mechanics to complex networks. In this paper, we present evidence that a commonly used expression for the partition function of a system of distinguishable particles leads to huge fluctuations of the number of particles in the grand canonical ensemble and, consequently, to nonequivalence of statistical ensembles. We will show that the alternative definition of the partition function including, naturally, Boltzmann’s correct counting factor for distinguishable particles solves the problem and restores ensemble equivalence. Finally, we also show that this choice for the partition function does not produce any inconsistency for a system of distinguishable localized particles, where the monoparticular partition function is not extensive.

A Canonical Ensemble Approach to the Fermion/Boson Random Point Processes and its Applications
We introduce the boson and the fermion point processes from the elementary quantum mechanical point of view. That is, we consider quantum statistical mechanics of canonical ensemble for a fixed number of particles which obey Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac statistics, respectively, in a finite volume. Focusing on the distribution of positions of the particles, we have point processes of the fixed nu...
متن کاملThe effective equivalence of geometric irregularity and surface roughness in determining particle single-scattering properties.
This study investigates the effects of geometric irregularity and surface roughness on the single-scattering properties of randomly oriented dielectric particles. Starting from a regular crystal with smooth faces, effects of roughening are compared with effects of perturbing the regular configuration of the smooth faces. Using the same slope distribution for small roughness facets and tilted fa...
متن کاملSimple Harmonic Oscillator Canonical Ensemble Model for Tunneling Radiation of Black Hole
A simple harmonic oscillator canonical ensemble model for Schwarzchild black hole quantum tunneling radiation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the equivalence between canonical ensemble model and Parikh–Wilczek’s tunneling method is introduced. Then, radiated massless particles are considered as a collection of simple harmonic oscillators. Based on this model, we treat the black hole as a he...

Low radiation intensity heat transfer from methane blue flame has turned into a challenge in industry. The addition of soot into the flame can enhance the radiation. However, the effect of adding soot on chain reaction of methane combustion and NO & CO emissions has not been assessed. Furthermore, one of the most important factors to be considered is the size of the fine particles. Therefore, t...
متن کاملRegarding the Entropy of Distinguishable Particles
The conventional way of explaining Gibbs paradox as due to the distinguishability of particles has been challenged recently and a new fundamental definition for the entropy has been proposed that gives the same entropy for distinguishable particles as for indistinguishable particles. In this paper arguments are presented that strongly favor the conventional definition of entropy and its resolut...
