چکیده

Abstract An overview of recent improvements in the understanding and maturity of linear mode photon counting with HgCdTe electron-initiated avalanche photodiodes is presented. The first HgCdTe LMPC 2x8 format array fabricated in 2011 with 64 μm pitch was a remarkable success in terms of demonstrating a high single photon signal to noise ratio of 13.7 with an excess noise factor of 1.3-1.4, a 7 ns minimum time between events, and a broad spectral response extending from 0.4 μm to 4.2 μm. The main limitations were a greater than 10x higher false event rate than expected of > 1 MHz, a 5-7x lower than expected APD gain, and a photon detection efficiency of only 50% when greater than 60% was expected. This paper discusses the reasons behind these limitations and the implementation of their mitigations with new results.

Single Photon Counting with a focus On Biomedical Applications

Introduction: Over the past few years a growing number of companies have come to rely on Photon Counting for applications that range from particle sizing, atmospheric studies and advanced forms of biomedical research. Photon counting technology using Avalanche Photodiodes are achieving 70% photon detection efficiencies with sub nanosecond timing jitters and low dark counts (typically < 250cps)....

Neural Imaging Using Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes

Introduction: This paper analyses the ability of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for neural imaging. The current trend in the production of SPADs moves toward the minimumdark count rate (DCR) and maximum photon detection probability (PDP). Moreover, the jitter response which is the main measurement characteristic for the timing uncertainty is progressing. Methods: The neural imaging pro...

Low-Noise Free-Running High-Rate Photon-Counting for Space Communication and Ranging

We present performance data for low-noise free-running high-rate photon counting method for space optical communication and ranging. NASA GSFC is testing the performance of two types of novel photon-counting detectors 1) a 2x8 mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe) avalanche array made by DRS Inc., and a 2) a commercial 2880-element silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) array. We successfully measured...

Probabilistic analysis of Linear Mode vs Geiger Mode APD FPAs for advanced LADAR enabled interceptors

To meet evolving ballistic missile threats, advanced seekers will include a multi-modal imaging capability in which a passive singleor multi-band infrared focal plane array (FPA) shares a common aperture with an active laser radar (LADAR) receiver – likely, a photon-counting LADAR receiver that can resolve photon times of arrival with subnanosecond resolution. The overall success of such a syst...

HgCdTe e-APD detector arrays with single photon sensitivity for space lidar applications

A multi-element HgCdTe electron initiated avalanche photodiode (e-APD) array has been developed for space lidar applications. The detector array was fabricated with 4.3-μm cutoff HgCdTe which covered a spectral response from 0.4 to 4.3 μm. We have characterized a 4x4 detector array with 80 μm square elements and an integrated custom cryogenic silicon read-out integrated circuit (ROIC). The devi...
