چکیده

A survey of septic tank design shows that short-circuiting is minimized and effluent quality is improved when quiet, laminar, fluid-flow is encouraged, such as in long, narrow tanks with little hydraulic ‘dead space’. Longitudinal partitions provide better solids retention by providing longer travel distance, but transverse partitions are advantageous only when the opening between compartments is large enough to permit quiet flow. Field testing using synthetic solids shows that a partitioned standard tank with two 150mm openings provides better relative retention of incoming sewage than a short, singlecompartment standard tank of the same depth, even when dosed at the same relative volumes. Dosing rates of 10% of tank volume result in more than double the solids short-circuiting than 5% volume dosing. Proprietary tanks (WaterTubeTM) designed with no airspace and a long, narrow, shallow aspect to induce closed-conduit, laminar flow provided the best solids retention, with negligible flow-through even during sustained, high-rate pumping. Test results using sewage at the Massachusetts septic system test facility at Buzzards Bay showed that the proprietary flooded tank had no scum and very little sludge halfway along the pathway, with scum only in the inlet riser, confirming the relation between air space and formation of hard, moldering scum.

Performance evaluation of modified up flow septic tanks reactor for treatment of synthetic wastewater

Background and Objective: Considering 829000 annual diarrhoeal deaths due to water pollution worldwide, the World Health Organization has emphasized that countries should reduce this rate by upgrading their wastewater treatment systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a modified up flow septic tanks reactor for treatment of synthetic wastewater. Materials and Metho...

Inverse Boundary Design Problem of Combined Radiation-convection Heat Transfer in Laminar Recess Flow

In the present work, an inverse analysis of combined radiation and laminar forced convection heat transfer in a two-dimensional channel with variable cross sections is performed. The conjugate gradient method is used to find the temperature distribution over the heater surface to satisfy the prescribed temperature and heat flux distributions over the design surface. The fluid is considered to b...

Laminar and Turbulent Aero Heating Predictions over Blunt Body in Hypersonic Flow

In the present work, an engineering method is developed to predict laminar and turbulent heating-rate solutions for blunt reentry spacecraft at hypersonic conditions. The calculation of aerodynamic heating around blunt bodies requires alternative solution of inviscid flow field around the hypersonic bodies. In this paper, the procedure is of an inverse nature, that is, a shock wave is assumed a...

Parametric Study of Charging Inlet Diffuser Performance in Stratified Chilled Water Storage Tanks with Radial Diffusers: Part 1–Model Development and Validation

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been developed to simulate the flow and heat transfer near a lower radial inlet diffuser in a cylindrical stratified chilled water storage tank during charging. The model was used to perform parametric simulations of inlet diffuser performance in full-scale tanks during thermocline formation, from which first-order correlation relating thermal perf...

On the Analysis of Laminar Flow of Viscous Fluid through a Porous Channel with Suction/Injection at Slowly Expanding or Contracting Walls

The vast biological and industrial applications of laminar flow of viscous fluid through a porous channel with contracting or expanding permeable wall have attest to the importance of studying the flow process. In this paper, two-dimensional flow of viscous fluid in a porous channel through slowly expanding or contracting walls with injection or suction is analyzed using variation parameter met...
