چکیده

The effect of different 10 MeV equivalent proton fluences on the performance of E2V Technologies (formerly Marconi applied technologies, formerly EEV) L3Vision Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) was investigated. The first experimental radiation damage results of the L3Vision device are presented, with emphasis given to the analysis of damage to the gain register of the device. Changes in dark current and generation of bright pixels in the CCD image, store, readout register and gain register as a result of proton irradiation are reported and viewed in light of the potential use of the device in space-based applications. r 2003 Elsevier B.V. Proton irradiation of e2v technologies L3Vision devices

This paper describes the proton irradiation and subsequent analysis of 8 e2v technologies CCD65 L3Vision devices with the intention of assessing the suitability of L3Vision technology to applications in space. In particular the use of L3Vision charge coupled devices (CCDs) on the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) instrument of the planned European Space Agency GAIA mission is discussed. The op...

Radiation damage in charge-coupled devices.

Due to their high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio, charge-coupled devices (CCDs) have been the preferred optical photon detectors of astronomers for several decades. CCDs are flown in space as the main detection instrument on several well-known missions, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton or the Cassini Probe. Also, CCDs are frequently used in satellite star trackers which pro...

CCD QE in the Soft X-ray Range

e2v has previously provided back-illuminated CCDs for several solar observation projects, resulting in a number of key articles on CCD QE in the soft X-ray region. To update these, e2v has arranged for tests on X-ray optimised EMCCDs at a synchrotron. These have shown QE of at least 45% from 40 eV to 2000 eV, with Enhanced process devices having significantly higher QE than Basic process. The m...

Charge Transfer Efficiency in a p-channel CCD irradiated cryogenically and the impact of room temperature annealing

It is important to understand the impact of the space radiation environment on detector performance, thereby ensuring that the optimal operating conditions are selected for use in flight. The best way to achieve this is by irradiating the device using appropriate mission operating conditions, i.e. holding the device at mission operating temperature with the device powered and clocking. This pap...
