On the dynamic estimation of multicast group sizes

چکیده
This paper concerns multicast applications that are interested in the evolution of their membership over time. It covers optimal on-line estimation algorithms for determining the membership of a multicast group. The paper briefly reviews the related work and our own contributions to the field. Using a probabilistic acknowledgement scheme – its period and probability can be set to achieve high quality estimation while simultaneously avoiding feedback implosion – and signal processing’s filtering techniques, we have derived MSE-optimal estimators under the assumptions of Poisson subscribers arrival and either exponentially or hyperexponentially distributed lifetime of receivers. Our estimators have been tested through trace-driven simulations using data from real multicast video sessions over which they exhibit very good performance.

Optimal on-line estimation of the size of a dynamic multicast group
In this paper we propose an optimal on-line estimation algorithm for determining the size of a dynamic multicast group. By using diffusion approximation and Kalman filter, we derive an estimator that minimizes the mean square of the estimation error. As opposed to previous studies, where the size of the multicast group is supposed to be fixed throughout the estimation procedure, we consider a d...
متن کاملAMRoute: Ad Hoc Multicast Routing Protocol
The Ad hoc Multicast Routing protocol (AMRoute) presents a novel approach for robust IP Multicast in mobile ad hoc networks by exploiting user-multicast trees and dynamic logical cores. It creates a bidirectional, shared tree for data distribution using only group senders and receivers as tree nodes. Unicast tunnels are used as tree links to connect neighbors on the user-multicast tree. Thus, A...
متن کاملA Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks
Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
متن کاملReal-Time Monitoring of Multicast Group Information
This paper presents a method to monitor information of a large-sized multicast group that can follow the group’s dynamics in realtime while avoiding feedback implosion by using probabilistic polling. In particular, this paper improves the probabilistic-polling-based approach by deriving a reference mean value as the reference control value for the number of expected feedback from the properties...
متن کاملMulticast Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Distributed Reinforcement Learning Approach
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are consist of independent distributed sensors with storing, processing, sensing and communication capabilities to monitor physical or environmental conditions. There are number of challenges in WSNs because of limitation of battery power, communications, computation and storage space. In the recent years, computational intelligence approaches such as evolutionar...
