چکیده

Motivated by a security problem in geographic information systems, we study the following graph theoretical problem: given a graph G, two special nodes s and t in G, and a number k, find k paths from s to t in G so as to minimize the number of edges shared among the paths. This is a generalization of the well-known disjoint paths problem. While disjoint paths can be computed efficiently, we show that finding paths with minimum shared edges is NP-hard. Moreover, we show that it is even hard to approximate the minimum number of shared edges within a factor of 2 1−ε , for any constant ε > 0. On the positive side, we show that there exists a (k−1)-approximation algorithm for the problem, using an adaption of a network flow algorithm. We design some heuristics to improve the quality of the output, and provide empirical results.

The Minimum Shared Edges Problem on Planar Graphs

We study the Minimum Shared Edges problem introduced by Omran et al. [Journal of Combinatorial Optimization, 2015] on planar graphs: Planar MSE asks, given a planar graph G = (V,E), two distinct vertices s, t ∈ V , and two integers p, k ∈ N, whether there are p s-t paths in G that share at most k edges, where an edges is called shared if it appears in at least two of the p s-t paths. We show th...

The Minimum Vulnerability Problem on Graphs

Suppose that each edge e of an undirected graph G is associated with three nonnegative integers cost(e), vul(e) and cap(e), called the cost, vulnerability and capacity of e, respectively. Then, we consider the problem of finding k paths in G between two prescribed vertices with the minimum total cost; each edge e can be shared without cost by at most vul(e) paths, and can be shared by more than...

An Optimal Algorithm for Minimum-Link Rectilinear Paths in Triangulated Rectilinear Domains

We consider the problem of finding minimum-link rectilinear paths in rectilinear polygonal domains in the plane. A path or a polygon is rectilinear if all its edges are axis-parallel. Given a set P of h pairwise-disjoint rectilinear polygonal obstacles with a total of n vertices in the plane, a minimumlink rectilinear path between two points is a rectilinear path that avoids all obstacles with ...

The Parameterized Complexity of the Minimum Shared Edges Problem

We study the NP-complete Minimum Shared Edges (MSE) problem. Given an undirected graph, a source and a sink vertex, and two integers p and k, the question is whether there are p paths in the graph connecting the source with the sink and sharing at most k edges. Herein, an edge is shared if it appears in at least two paths. We show that MSE is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the treewidth of the...

The Minimum Shared Edges Problem on Grid-Like Graphs

We study the NP-hard Minimum Shared Edges (MSE) problem on graphs: decide whether it is possible to route p paths from a start vertex to a target vertex in a given graph while using at most k edges more than once. We show that MSE can be decided on bounded grids in linear time when both dimensions are either small or large compared to the number p of paths. On the contrary, we show that MSE rem...
