Initial studies on proton computed tomography using a silicon strip detector telescope
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report initial results of a feasibility study of Proton Computed Tomography and Proton Transmission Radiography for applications in proton therapy treatment planning and patient positioning. The aim of the study is to explore experimentally if PCT, which is based on the measurement of the specific energy loss of protons traversing tissues of different density, may be preferred to X-ray Computed Tomography and X-ray radiography, which are presently used for radiation treatment planning and patient positioning in proton treatment centers. We present first data from proton transmission studies through a hollow aluminum cylinder taken with a telescope of silicon detectors with very high spatial and good energy resolution. In addition, we report the results of GEANT4 simulations of proton transport through the same object, which show good agreement with experimental results and explain the observed features of the proton transmission image. r 2003 Elsevier B.V. Monte Carlo Studies on Proton Computed Tomography using a Silicon Strip Detector Telescope
Monte Carlo computer programs such as the GEANT4 toolkit include precise models of particle interactions and can be an invaluable tool for studying the feasibility of new imaging techniques such as proton computed tomography (pCT). Presented in this paper is a comparison of laboratory data with GEANT4 predictions for the imaging characteristics of a simple metal object using a particle beam and...
متن کاملOperation and performance of the CBM Silicon Tracking reference telescope∗
A reference tracking telescope consisting of three stations based on double-sided silicon microstrip detectors has been constructed and tested in a 2 GeV proton beam experiment at GSI. This proof-of-principle device designed for charged particle track measurement with high spatial resolution closely integrates silicon sensors with self-triggering front-end electronics. Each station features the...
متن کاملAssessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method
Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

متن کاملSpectral Computed Tomography with a Photon-Counting Silicon-Strip Detector
Computed tomography (CT) is a widely used medical imaging modality. By rotating an x-ray tube and an x-ray detector around the patient, a CT scanner is able to measure the x-ray transmission from all directions and form an image of the patient’s interior. CT scanners in clinical use today all use energy-integrating detectors, which measure the total incident energy for each measurement interval...
